We were staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and my 7 year old son wanted to go surfing. After doing a quick search on Google Maps I ran across "Adventures In Paradise Oahu." I contacted Shane and set up a lesson in the morning. After meeting Shane I could tell my little one would be in good hands! We watched on the rocks as they paddled out together on Shane's long board. Within minutes of reaching the break, they were catching waves and my little one was up surfing like Kia Lenny! 😂 Ok, maybe he's not as good, but I can say that after an hour of surfing they caught more waves that I cared to count. After getting back to the Condo, my little one relentlessly kept asking when he could do another lesson with "Uncle Shane?" We had to leave the next day, but was able to set up another lesson early in the AM before we left for the airport. Shane offered to bring me a board so I could go out with them. Not only did he bring an extra board, he brought his buddy "Captain Neil" to hang with me while we were out surfing. All I can say is that Shane and Neil are absolutely great guys and I couldn't have been happier that we chose them for our surf adventure. My only regret is that we didn't get a hold of them earlier for surfing and we're not able to set up a tour around the Island with them. Next time! They get 5 stars for a reason! After a long day of traveling back home, no joke, I was putting my little one to bed and he started crying hysterically. I asked what was wrong? Sobbing, he said "I just want to go Surf with Uncle Shane again!" 🤣😂😁 Thanks Uncle Shane and Captain Neil for the Ohana style adventure! Clearly a highlight...
Read moreWe originally gave Shane a two-day mission: Surf lessons for a 10-year-old girl, a good surf spot for dad (me), and things to do for my wife and 4-year-old. And btw, make it happen on the North Shore because a swell was arriving.
Shane quickly came up with a plan that involved about 10 destinations on the North Shore, from shave ice to local landmarks to surfing.
In the end, we spent four of our seven days on Oahu with Shane. We had a blast, and he never missed a beat.
We surfed the North Shore and fed the fish in Waikiki. When we decided to take a last-minute detour to a museum, Shane didn’t blink: He knew just the right place to grab a cup of coffee on the way, dropped us off and picked us up at the museum, took us for photos in front of the King Kamehameha statue then finished off the day with a surf session in Waikiki as the sun set behind us and the hotel lights spread out in front of us.
Shane had been recommended to us by another surf instructor but a couple things about Shane: He is not just a (great) surf instructor. He is an all-in-one adventure, food and history guide. He is also the real deal: Whenever and wherever we went surfing, he always knew someone in the water – if not everyone.
I think the greatest compliment I can give Shane is this: When you tour with Shane you are not on a tour. It’s like hanging out with your friend or relative who just happens to be the unofficial mayor of Waikiki.
As other people have posted here, I would add: Make sure you try the family banana bread.
And finally, a sort of inside joke between Shane and I (you can ask him what it...
Read moreWe had a fantastic day exploring the island with Shane :) my daughter woke up on the day of our excursion and mentioned she was wanting an adventure and that’s exactly what we got. First, he took us to a great spot for snorkeling. We were able to see tons of amazing tropical fish and beautiful corals. Next, we went searching for sea turtles :) When it looked like there was nothing to see at Turtle beach I was a little disappointed because I really love sea turtles but Shane knew of another spot they hang out so we went to a more secluded beach and saw at least 6! They were amazing and right next to shore. After that we stopped by a macadamia but stand to get some local island treats and had lunch at an iconic food truck. Then we headed to the other side of the island to see diamond head. The whole time Shane was telling us the history of the island and local traditions. As a history buff I loved learning all about the island :) then he did a little customization of the tour when we mentioned my daughter wanted to get some vintage Hawaiian shirts. He took us to a couple vintage shops in Waikiki and my daughter found several great shirts and she was thrilled to shop in vintage stores in Hawaii. Then we stopped by Leonard’s bakery and a shave ice stand which made the perfect ending for our day out. Shane really knows the island well and all the best places to see and he put extra effort into making our day special. We had a wonderful time and would recommend Adventures in Paradise to everyone...
