I would give it 5 stars, but for a bad server experience. Otherwise everything is great. I've been staying with family at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for a few days. We've eaten at Tropics about three times. Two nights ago, we had a server who asked my party a few racially tinted questions. We're a family of five - the first thing she asked when we sat down was whether we were splitting the bill or paying together. I'm not sure why she would think we would split the bill. There were only five of us and one was a child. I don't think most small parties split the bill, especially small families. Perhaps if the table had 6 or more people who were all adults, I could maybe see that. But in any case, I'm not sure why she would ask that right off the bat. If we wanted to split the bill, we would tell her that. We did not ask about it - her question was completely unprovoked.
Then, one of my party ordered an appetizer of popcorn shrimp. The server asked if everyone was sharing or if it was just for her. I don't think I've ever had a server ask me that, since it's not really their business. They just take the orders and bring them out to whomever ordered. She seemed very concerned that we wouldn't afford to eat in this restaurant.
Later, one of my party ordered a seared ahi salad. The woman took the time to explain - TWICE - that 'seared' means the ahi is not cooked well done. They told her they knew, she explained it again anyway. That was the most blatant insult. It was evident that she had an internal bias toward us and assumed we had no idea what seared ahi was. It's really irritating to go to a restaurant and be judged as poor and ignorant based on your skin color (I can't imagine another reason she would think we don't know what 'seared' means and kept asking about whether we were splitting the bill or sharing food). I think people need to do a better job of identifying their own biases and commit to changing them. I honestly don't care how old you are and what era you grew up in. If you interact with customers, you should learn to get over your prejudices. Not for nothing, she was so concerned with our ability to pay and our knowledge of cooking techniques, yet she would have earned quite a generous tip with the amount we spent, had she provided adequate and polite service.
However, this afternoon, our server Carlo was amazing. He was funny, personable, and polite. I have no complaints about the food. It hasn't...
Read moreThis was our first restraunt we sat down and ate at Hawaii. We went for breakfast around 8, and we had a group of 13. They sat us quickly. Our waiter had great customer service skills !! Brian was our waiter that morning. Our food was fantastic !! Great potato medley. Everyone enjoyed breakfast that morning. The drinks were great!!! This was a pleasant surprise since we have learned over the years that resort restraunts/hotel reatraunts aren't always the best quality but more for convenience. We did pick here for breakfast because of its convenience to the Hilton Hawaiian Villiage. We were pleasantly surprised !! That's was our first visit. Two members of our group went another 2 times without the group and had great experiences both times. We had another free morning, and our breakfast spot we originally picked for the day was closed . So we choose to go to tropics again. We knew we loved the breakfast, and it was coconvent. We unfortunately didn't make breakfast as they stopped serving it around 10:30 . But we got to try lunch. This visit was equal, if not better. We really lunch ked out in the waiter department . I was so shocked that we had such great services yet again. Our waiter Sohe** ( not sure of spelling) was so considerate. He anticipated needs quickly , he was kind, and you could just feel that he was a good human. One of the kids spilled her coke, and we was cleaning it up . He said no, no, sit and eat, I will clean . He insisted. He brought a new drink quickly . Lunch was burgers and fries all around, and everyone seemed pleased. I wouldn't say it held the same taste as breakfast, but definitely good. We ended up visiting one last time as a group. We made it for breakfast, which was the goal. We had to have those potatoes again. I personally wanted that omelet!!! Our food was great and the service was good once again. I don't know if this place is just filled with good servers or we just got lucky, but it was refreshing to have good service consistently. Our waiters name on our 3rd visit was Glen !! Also of course the beachfront set for a beautiful view while eating. Thank you, Tropics for making our food choices a little easier while...
Read moreI was there on Saturday 7/13/24. Because I was by myself and the wait time for a table was about 25 minutes, I asked if I could eat my breakfast at the bar. When I sat down and ordered my meal, coffee and water, a man sisting next to me started verbally assulting me because I was looking at my phone and not the Ocean. I realized that he was drunk at 9ish in the morning. So, I signaled to the waiters behind and said, "Excuse me. This man is verbally assulting me and cussing at me because I am not looking at the ocean. I just wanted to be left alone to eat my breakfast in peace". The waiter, just waived the drunk guy off and told him, "You're OK". The waiters did not defend me, come to my rescue or even ask the man to leave. I was left to defend myself. The drunk guy walked out but left his back pack so I knew he would have to come back to get it. I told the waiter, "He is going to come back for his back pack and if he continued to verbally assult me, there would be a "scene" because I will stand up for myself and defend myself". The waiter told me to calm down. Unbelievable! I was so scared and mad, I was shaking. The drunk guy did come back and get his back pack and flipped me the bird two times. To both times I replied, "Have a nice day sir and keep spreading the love". The thing I am upset about is that the waiters DID NOTHING to help me. I understand that I was sitting at the bar, but that doesn't give anyone the right to verbally assult another customer. One of the waiters said that this guy was running other customers off because he was going off on them as well. I believe that the waiters should be trained to get rid of the customer disturbing the peace and running other customers off, but they didn't. This incident really rattled me. It was the only bad experience I had in Hawaii. Othere than this, the food...
