We had a fantastic Hawaiian breakfast at Goofy Cafe & Dine which would have been an almost perfect experience if not for the insanely long wait to seat and the staff, doing the best they can amidst all the pressure leading them to not be as effusive as we would have liked.
We waited about an hour to get a table. This is Waikiki so I guess we can't fault a restaurant for being popular...What could have made it better? How about selling beverages to people waiting? I asked if I could order a coffee to drink while waiting for a table and they explained they don't do takeout of any kind. Their choice, of course, but I've been at many a popular brunch place that does offer this and it's a much better experience. In this case, there's only so much shade and you're sitting with a large crowd of people, all of whom seem unhappy. The staff wasn't unfriendly or rude, but they also seemed unhappy which is unfortunate as they're the front line interface to all of us and it makes for a not-so pleasant experience.
The food, however was definitely worth the wait.
I had a cup of their Maui blend coffee which as exactly as strong as it needed to be and an awesome first cup of coffee for me in Hawaii.
My wife had the Veggie Benedict with lilikoi butter brushed hollandaise, purple potatoes, and pineapple (instead of kale). The eggs were perfectly cooked and oozed yolk when forked.
The Taro English muffin had a little bitterness to it and our kid really dug it.
I did side orders of scramble egg whites with cheddar (cooked perfectly), purple potatoes (which I'm sure were good but they weren't really my potato preference...It's like sweet potatoes...if you like them, you love them...if you don't you'd prefer regular potatoes. I had to try them but I landed in the "I prefer regular potatoes camp." I also had a side of toast and they were nice enough to give ma side of the lilikoi butter for it which is normally just used to add to their holllandaise sauce. It made the bread nice and sweet
Our kid had a side of yogurt which came chunkier than he wanted and he had to stir it for days for him to be comfortable eating it.
This was a great Hawaiian style breakfast which we would happily eat again if we built up our stamina for the wait.
Please Goofy...can your staff be a little more goofy, or pleasant, and knowing the long waits are happening, consider taking care of the people waiting...

Read moreThe line moves quicker than you’d think and is well worth the wait!
I arrived around 9:10am on a Wednesday and there was a line but we were in our seats within 20-25min.
Service was amazing and very reminiscent of Japan (a few of the staff were definitely either Japanese or part Japanese). We ordered two dishes and an açai bowl and when they saw we weren’t done with our hot dishes when they prepared the açai bowl, they told us they’ll keep it in the fridge until we were ready. I didn’t even have to ask for them to bring out the açai bowl when we were ready. The waiter made eye contact with me at the right moment and knew to bring it out.
The food was amazing! Highly recommend the Loco Moco. I don’t usually like Loco Moco but this was the best Loco Moco I’ve ever tried and I couldn’t stop eating it. We also ordered the Hawaiian Omelette (without cheese) and substituted for Taro Muffin. The Taro Muffin is a must. I think the lack of cheese made the omelette taste a bit less cohesive, but all of the ingredients were delicious on their own as well. The Niu Açai Bowl was massive and I loved the coconut jelly and chia seeds. The açai was pretty frozen / cold so great for a hot day!
We also had 2 juices, which were delicious. In total, between two people, we had 3 dishes and 2 juices, which totaled to $100 including tip. The portions are quite generous so we were very full but did clean up most of our plates!
Highly recommend and don’t be put off...
