Murphy's Muffler Est 1997 — Local services in Johnson City

I literally coasted into Murphy's Muffler with an overheating cat converter that essentially locked my car down. I had my 84 yr old disabled mother with me. We were over an hour from home...and it had already been a long, stressful day...

Hunter put down his tools and immediately pulled up the diagnostic codes...which proved out one of the catalytic converters was the culprit...and we had stalled in the parking lot of a specialty exhaust shop that listed cat converters as a primary service.

Details on the wacko next three hours aren't necessary...but suffice to say that the owner, Josh Murphy, and his partner Hunter, were kind and accomodating. They quoted us a fair price on the repairs and helped us find a rental car...which didn't happen, because Johnson City hadn't one car available...even at the airport.

We were stranded...away from home...and my mom was flagging fast. Josh and Hunter helped us find a nearby hotel...and gave us a ride...insisting even though it meant hauling two distraught women packing a cane, a walker, and a wheelchair.

Seriously....these guys are our heroes. We got acquainted with another customer during our 3 hour wait for AAA...who highly recommended their work. So, we left the car at Murphy's Mufflers, and felt good about it. I mean...the car's cat converter failed in a cat converter shop. Destiny?

So...no one likes a day like this...or an unexpected major repair...especially when one is stranded away from home. But, all in all, Josh and Hunter ended up being angels in disguise...and...

I strongly discourage anyone from using this exhaust shop for non-American vehicles as they make snap decisions on cars they do not know about and without the proper information.

I currently drive an Audi B9 S4/5, a vehicle with one turbo, and ONE catalytic converter that is directly off the turbo, but was told repeatedly by this shop that what I wanted (a VPS pre-resonator delete) was something they can not do as it modified “the cats”. I tried informing this shop that no, they are mistaken as Audi themselves offer this modification as a factory option, something they would NOT do if it was modifying emissions standards, but they ignored me.

I admittedly did not send a screenshot from the forums or ProDemand showing the exhaust diagrams to prove this shop was wrong, but I was so frustrated that I didn’t think to do that. In my head, I assumed they Googled the kit I brought for them. I did, however, try to explain this in detail over the phone. This is also something that other owners across the nation mentioned happening, but I assumed that going with a local shop that is known for working on performance vehicles would mean I could explain myself....

I cant recommend Murphy's Muffler enough. Just took my early 2000s Buick in to Josh to have the catalytic converter replaced. Called yesterday and they were able to get me in today, 30 minutes in and out the door with a new cat and a car that finally has power again. The car runs great and everyone was friendly and welcoming. The price was great too, i was expecting it to be more expensive than it was and the price quoted is what I paid. They also double checked to ensure that the catalytic converter did actually need to be replaced because no code was showing up to indicate that. I will be recommending Josh and his shop to anyone in need of exhaust work or detailing,...
