As a 7-year recording engineer with extensive experience in tracking, mixing, and mastering, my time at Jam Rocc Recording in LA was one of the most frustrating and unprofessional experiences I’ve had in this industry.

The studio underpays its engineers and expects independent contractors to act as personal marketers. I personally walked around Hollywood handing out flyers to promote the studio—on my own time—just to be told it still wasn’t enough. Instead of focusing on the quality of work or building a strong creative culture, the owner puts all responsibility on the engineers to bring in clients, ignoring the fact that we can’t force people to book sessions.

The environment is disrespectful and controlling. The owner frequently speaks to staff like they’re children and expects everyone to respond to messages instantly, regardless of their personal time or circumstances. For example, he asked everyone to put a ✅ in the group chat. I had done this 6 out of 7 times, but missed it once because I was supporting my cousin at a basketball game. Despite being professional, respectful, and consistently on top of my work, he took it as disrespect and fired me.

On top of that, interns are treated as free labor, with no real learning opportunities in recording, mixing, or mastering. They’re used like tools, not trained like future professionals.

At the end of the day, this studio isn’t about music or team-building—it’s about control and squeezing profit. The owner doesn’t invest in his engineers or interns; he just expects loyalty without giving respect in return.
