Extremely demeaning and crude. I do not know who the owner is but their team is condescending. I accidentally emailed their store due to their SEO being altered to match a particular search, in my situation a search that included "NOW Magazine La." I realized the error when I received the automated email stating they would return my inquiry as soon as they could and the signature mentioned they were a cookbook store. I was already embarrassed and assumed I'd receive a kind response, from an actual person, letting me know of my error. Nope. The NS team decided to put me down and imply I was an idiot. What is wrong with people? Is it really that difficult to be kind? Who's initial desire to a simple mistake is to be mean? Are you that insecure that you get off on putting random strangers down? I guess so. As I mentioned in my response they are selling more than cookbooks, they're also selling unwarranted negativity. Attached is their response.

After being burned by too many cookbooks with glossy covers but not so great recipes inside (looking at you Molly Baz!) I realized you really should see a cookbook in person before buying it. So yesterday I headed to Now Serving to see what all the fuss was about. This is such a delightful, well stocked and well curated shop. The people who work there are both well informed and also the nicest people I’ve ever met. I learned more about home cooking in my 20 minute conversation with them than I have in a lifetime of watching cooking shows. We need places like this to stay in business! Please support them! You can never have too many cookbooks.

CANADIANS BEWARE! My wife wanted an autographed cookbook that I found at this shop that was advertising on the internet. I ordered it in May 2023. It was Finally delivered at the end of September. That's not the issue. I understand that sometime it takes a while to get the author to take the time and sign her book. What is the issue is that they charged me $23.24 shipping then $1.95 route protection. ROUTE PROTECTION ???what the hell is that? If you want an extra $2.00 ask! But ok I accepted that. I live in Canada and shipping is expensive from the USA. BUT THEN THEY SHIP UPS- the biggest rip off on the planet Duties and taxes on the book which they made sure to let the Canadian government know what I paid for the book came to $4.09. Ok. NO BIG DEAL! So now the book was $37.00, $2.00 to protect the road or something and $23.24 to ship. Ok. $60.19 USD. which come out to about $85.00. A bit expensive for a book that sells in Canada for $45 unsigned but hey a happy wife is a happy life. Right? The UPS add on a additional $30 for them to collect the $3.99 in taxes! So now this book cost 120.00. Now if they had shipped this book, USPS, there would not have been any handling charge and four items under $100.99 times out of 100 there is never a duty and taxes charge added on. I called the store to alert them they had told me that they can't do anything about it. They have lost too many books over the years shipping via USPS which quite frankly I don't believe I've been ordering items from the USA for the past 25 years and have never had anything lost from US PS, but that they would get their head of shipping to call me back. Of course, no one called me back anyway. Canadians beware don't shop here. Wait for indigo to get the book. These guys will screw you 10 ways to Sunday.

I see the store has responded--I never was upset about the length of time from the purchase of the book to the delivery-I state that in my complaint- what is offensive is the fact that you would use UPS who charged and extra $30 plus dollars in fees to deliver my book-Never had an issue witrh taxes or duties again as stated earlier- you should take a lesson from Barnes and Noble whom I buy from regularly-they always use USPS-they charge $15 delivery which is fair and the current going rate and I've been buying from them for YEARS! A book sent to me has never been lost-are there post office people waitng for your cookbooks to steal them I think not-I do think that you do not want to bring the book over to a local post office and UPS picks up so it makles it easier--as I said earlier and after reading you answer I WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER ITEM FROM YOUR STORE...

THIS REVIEW IS FOR ANY OF MY BLACK FOLKS ANY OF OUR FELLOW ALLIES CONSIDERING SHOPPING HERE!

DON’T!!!!

Beautiful book store with an amazing selection of books. However these people are RACIST!!! I wouldn’t recommend supporting them unless you’re into supporting bigotry, discrimination and classism.

Instead of asking me not to take pictures or film in the store they rather use micro aggressions and accused me of STEALING recipes LOL.

As you can imagine I was instantly offended at this accusation. I tried to keep my cool. I even offered to purchase all of the books I looked at, but the lady wanted to argue and go back in forth about how she wasn’t discriminating and that taking pictures of recipes and not purchasing the books was STEALING. I continued to offer to pay but she wouldn’t ring me up. Eventually I asked her did she want me to buy the books or leave and she asked me to LEAVE.

I normally don’t leave reviews but as a black man in Los Angeles, I’m tired of these businesses treating me like a criminal or some thug.

IM STILL LAUGHING AT “STEALING RECIPES” BETWEEN GOOGLE, YOUTUBE, AND TIKTOK WHY WOULD ONE NEED TO...
