I recently visited Vallarta Supermarkets, and I have to say, I was thoroughly impressed with the selection and overall experience. Vallarta truly offers everything you would expect from a great grocery store — and then some.

Walking in, I immediately noticed how well-stocked and diverse the store was. Beyond the essentials, they have an entire candy section that's colorful and fun to browse. Fresh fruit bowls are beautifully displayed and ready to grab, perfect for a healthy snack on the go. I was also surprised and delighted to find fresh handmade sushi available — a nice touch that you don't typically expect outside of specialty stores.

The tamales stood out as well, both sweet and savory options made fresh and full of authentic flavor. Vallarta also has an incredible prepared foods section, offering hot meals that are ideal for days when you just don't feel like cooking. Their bakery is filled with fresh-baked goods that smell amazing, and the tortilla station produces warm, fresh tortillas right before your eyes.

The meat counter and deli counter were both impressive — clean, well-organized, and offering a great range of cuts and prepared meats. Their Agua Frescas stand was another highlight, with vibrant, refreshing drinks available in a variety of flavors.

In terms of pricing, I found Vallarta's prices very comparable to Vons and Ralph’s, which is a huge plus considering the variety and freshness you're getting. Another major convenience: they offer self-checkout for quick trips, but also keep plenty of cashier lanes open for a faster, more traditional checkout experience — something I really appreciate when shopping with a full cart.

Buyer Beware. I was about to buy some Shrimp that was on sale, deveined, and large. I compared it to the other selection and thought this would be a great buy. Until I leaned down and looked at the other shrimp in the container and realized they had the larger shrimp up front, and the shrimp they would grab and sell you was much smaller. When I brought this to the employee's attention he immediately removed the container and began separating the shrimp. He knew exactly what the scam was. He was busted.
