Local Pros Maui Private Surf Lessons — Local services in Maui

I originally chose Local Pros Maui because the location where they teach was geographically close to where I'm staying during my vacation -- but even if I was an hour away next visit, I'd still come back to them. They're THAT good.

This was my first surf lesson, and probably the first really physical thing since the pandemic started I've done in awhile. I decided to do a private 1x1 lesson because I was worried I would hold back a group since I'm not as in-shape as I used to be, and I didn't want the anxiety and frustration of not getting it to ruin the experience.

Turns out, my instructor Nick is such an amazing teacher and human being that even when I was a little slow to figure things out, I was having SO MUCH FUN the whole time. Nick in particular has a real gift of making a person feel welcome, excited to learn about surfing, and wanting to engage on a real level. There was expert guidance on what to do, where to improve and build on after each try, and sincere support. I really felt like he was cheering me on and really wanted me to stand on that board. When I did, it felt like such an achievement! Nick also generously stayed on with me a bit longer beyond my slotted time because he didn't have a lesson after me -- I really appreciated it and it just added to making my bucket list activity even more special.

Their whole team (from what I observed) just seems to have a knack of making surfing accessible for all ages; the little kids doing tandem lessons were having a blast, the adults like me had smiles on their faces too. Highly recommend to anyone that's curious about surfing to go with Local Pros Maui. Next time, I'll be booking lessons for my kids...

The instructors were top-notch. One, in particular, went above and beyond in guiding our younger surfers, offering personalized support and encouragement every step of the way. The team provided all necessary equipment, ensuring that we could focus on having fun—just bring a towel, sunscreen, and a water bottle!

A special mention to the professional photographer who captured each moment beautifully—every wave, smile, and thrilling wipeout was expertly documented, leaving us with memories to cherish forever.

I had a private lesson with Chaz! He was so awesome! On time and so nice! I’ve never surfed before in my life and he was so patient and encouraging. He didn’t waste a ton of time on the ground work which I appreciated. Once he thought I was ready and understood the ground work we hit the water. We actually got a ton of time in the water and he got me into a ton of waves and was so good to help me paddle out. I was able to get up on my second wave and rode the rest of them. He’s excellent at picking the right waves for your ability and so encouraging when you get up! There was definitely a huge difference between the lessons I received from him and the other surf schools that were also in the area. I wouldn’t go with anyone else other than Chaz with Local Pros Maui. I will definitely be back and requesting him for more lessons!
