I really like this place. It's a condominium complex with an on-site in-ground swimming pool. The pool has a shallow part for children as well. I think there are even a couple of gas grills you can use to grill your meats, if you like. Unfortunately, there's no restaurant on the premises. But it's a short walk across the street to a strip mall that has various restaurants and businesses; like Maui Brewing Co., McDonald's, etc. The staff at Royal Kahana are super friendly and helpful. They really make you feel welcome and are very accommodating. Our concierge, Kathleen, helped us get a great deal on a Maui tour (Road to Hana). It's about a 12 hour tour with various stops along the way and breathtaking views. Lunch was included which consisted of a sandwich, chips and a drink. Snacks and drinks were available for free throughout the whole tour, so don't worry about getting hungry or thirsty on this all day tour. Our guide, Melanie, was friendly and very knowledgeable. Learned lots of things about Maui and the Hawaiian Islands in general from her. We also made a few bathroom stops along the way. This is a very worthwhile tour to take if you want a general tour of the whole island. Our room was a massive studio. There's a king size bed with a sliding glass door to reveal a balcony with an absolutely gorgeous view of the ocean and the main road in front of this condominium resort. We had a small dinette area, a small living room with couch and coffee table, a fully furnished kitchen, a large bathroom, and an integrated laundry area with washer and dryer. Royal Kahana supplied everything we needed for a comfortable, clean stay. You are responsible for keeping your room clean during your stay. They provided laundry detergent, dish detergent, Swiffer wet pads with a Swiffer, a vacuum cleaner, even coffee and tea with creamer and sugar. You can shop across the street at the strip mall for your groceries. There are a couple of pretty good small grocery stores there. The Maui bus, S28, is about a 3-minute walk from the entrance of Royal Kahana. It costs only $2 per trip or $4 for a day pass. I'd recommend getting the day pass, especially if you have to take transfers because each transfer will cost you $2. We took the S28 to Ka'anapali and Whaler's Village. Both places have nice shops to browse around in and nice restaurants to eat in. Prices are of course steep. But what do you expect in the Hawaiian Islands? Still a nice experience though. While in Whaler's Village you have to try the hula pie, which I covered in a separate review. We made reservations at Hula Grill, also reviewed in a separate review. I highly recommend making reservations before going there, though. We had such a nice, stress-free experience at the Royal Kahana, that I'm really excited and looking forward to our next stay here; hopefully in the...
Read moreWhen I arrived late on November 20th at the Royal Kahana I was met with an unhelpful front desk person who handed me a key and said they would do paperwork in the morning because she had already turned off her computer. I asked if there was someone to help me with my bags and there was not. I asked about parking and she said Park anywhere. She did not tell me how to find my room or give me a map. I asked about breakfast and she handed me some flyer for an orientation. She then told me that on top of the $125 cleaning fee at check out I would also have to pay$25 a night if I wanted clean towels. I was annoyed at this point after a flight delay and the less than enthusiastic greeting. But all that aside. I went out to the parking lot to try to find parking and found there was nothing anywhere near the front of the building and I would have to walk quite a distance dragging my bags in order to get to my room which I had found because I looked online and found a map of the facility. So I went back to the front to leave my car in the drop off zone. By the time I returned inside there was nobody except a security guard sitting in a table by the door. The front desk was closed and no one else was around. I found the elevator to go to my room. When I found my room I open the door set down my bags and turned on the light. Immediately dozens of roaches scattered into the corners and under the appliances. Despite that I proceeded into the room it was late and I wasn't sure what to do. There were Roaches on the ceiling and on the wall. In looking at the bed I saw evidence that there were bed bugs as well. I immediately left the room. The woman downstairs by the door as security was still the only person there. I hand her back the key and told her that there were roaches and that I couldn't stay there. She said she couldn't help me. Her exact words were I don't know I can't help you with that. I then stated that I haven't touched anything in the room and should not be charged to cleaning fee. She asked me if I had closed the door and I said I had. I put my bags in the back of my car and drove to the closest location where I had seen other hotels which is Lahaina. I stopped at the Hyatt Regency and was informed that there weren't any rooms. My phone was dead and I had no way to look up hotels or get directions. It was dark, late and I was very tired. They allowed me to stay in the lobby to charge my phone and start searching for hotels on my laptop. I called dozens of hotels all across the island. I called hotels by the airport hotels in Kihei everywhere I called said...
Read moreI wrote to The Royal Kahana first, but they did not even respond to me. This is what I wrote: I am shocked by the treatment I received from Jim Johnson earlier today. I hope his behavior does not reflect your establishments values. My husband and I are almost 40. We have both been hearing about the beauty of Maui and the aloha spirit our entire lives. We could not wait to get settled in our condo and experience it for our selves. We walked down to the beach. With less than an hour out in Maui we got a bit turned around and came through your gate (a very short distance from where we were supposed to exit). We knew it wasn't our condos, but ours is directly across the street and we believed that they had the same owners. Regardless, soon as we went through we followed the exit signs through the parking garage and out to the street. We were almost to the street when Jim started yelling at us, following us to the street, "Hey, the two of you. I'm talking to you." I turned and asked if there was a problem. He did not ask if we needed help or any guidance. Obviously if he works here, he knows the area and could have provided us with some guidance. He wanted to know if we were staying at The Royal Kahana . I told him no and that we were staying across the street, had gotten a bit turned around and asked again if there was a problem. He said yes and that we weren't allowed on the property. It was so odd. We were on the property for less than two minutes. We were a bit lost and he seemed to be having some emotional break down about it. He declared that it was his responsibility to make sure that "people who didn't belong there stayed off the property". I could actually see his pulse racing. Geez, we had already walked through the parking garage and left. What if we were there to inquire about a rental!?! He didn't even introduce himself to us. I had to call to get his name. Needless to say we will never be patronizing your facilities. I understand that this will not effect your business, I just thought you should be aware of his outburst and what that shows tourist about your establishment. That entire experience was so odd. I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around his emotional reaction. Maybe he is having some personal problems, but I just can't believe how inappropriate it was to take it out on us, especially since we had already left. I hope I meet some Hawaiians tomorrow. That was certainly an awful...
