I write this review completely based off my personal experience and I feel it is super important to share.
I know some people are eagerly looking to get into a school fast to get a license, like me. But I wish I paused my breaks and looked into more valuable schools that would have pushed me in a POSITIVE direction, not shoving me on a probation for trying to leave. This review is solely my opinion and I hope it helps others.
For 1, I want to start out with our teacher Mrs.Gambino. An absolute beast at her job, does amazing at teaching and really sheds light on each of her students. Compassionate, nurturing and devoted to her students. She carries that school and in my opinion she is the only reason it is even still standing.
I want to express why I think everyone should look in another direction and pick another school. From my personal experience I was very much cornered, and I feel like also mistreated (others agree amongst the class as well). I had a somewhat close relationship with the owner of the school- Domonique, I even applauded her for pushing me even if it brought me immense stress in my last few months. But here is where I look back on an unsettling situation. I knew from day 1, I did not belong, but regardless I stuck it out. I expressed how the school not being acreddited really concerned me, but I was always assured “we are in the works of it” but I highly doubt this school will ever get there. I spent 6 months in this program, and only did a few skills before our teachers were switched. We didn’t do any labs/skills after my first month in the program. Lots of set backs and unfortunately I never attended a clinical, and current students still are not. In her contract I signed when I began the program, she states we needed to have clincals each semester but breeched them, didn’t provide us with what she promised on paper. I was kicked out (which is completely understandable) since I failed a final, and wasn’t meeting academic expectations. I’m not upset I lost money, time, or the opportunity to get my PN here in Florida, but it opened up many new opportunities for me to go get my RN in my hometown, as I can’t wait to begin nursing school again, and I won’t feel like a prisoner anymore. This school sculpted me (thanks to Gambino) but as for Domonique, you really put me through hell. It made me stronger, and I know where I stand. I have decided to called the BON due to the lack of providing clincals as promised and hopefully this review can influence individuals to not go to this school, but find a better education elsewhere.
My opinions are that it’s poorly ran, lack of clincals/skills and labs, as well as people being way too involved in students personal lives. I find it HIGHLY inappropriate that Domonique personally called my classmate to talk about me in negative ways. Please I beg you all stay away from this school. It’s not worth your money, and definetly not...
Read moreAfter reading many positive reviews I was thrilled to begin class last March with Horizon Healthcare Institute. Mrs. Dominque, who I believe is the head of the institute, is attentive and kind. However, I am saddened by the education our class received during our four weeks.
Our instructor Mrs. Janice was lovely and very knowledgeable, but struggled to provide us with the material in the hours we were scheduled to be in class. Our class would ask when certain material would be coming up, unfortunately most of the time she did not know. The syllabus was not updated at the beginning of the course, I believe it has not been updated since Covid. This may have contributed to the confusion of our instructor, ultimately leaving us confused and off track. We were not taught all the practical skills in person and were only hands on 2 of the 4 days we were in class. The last day they dismissed us an hour early… I am happy they provide videos online for the practical skills, however with the cost of the class, it was ideal to be taught in person and for us to learn hands on with the limited time provided.
Our final exam in class (not the state exam) consisted of information that was not in the textbook or taught over zoom meetings/in class. All four of us failed the first try, and the three others failed their 2nd attempt. I feel this result represents the teaching of the program. We were also told the exam would be administered to us the last day of class, but instead was given to us 2 weeks after the course was scheduled to finish.
With the certificates we received for the class, such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, and HIV/AIDS, it’s listed on the certificate that we received 4-6 contact hours as required by Florida Statue, however we only watched less than an hour long video for these subjects and took a quiz, that is all. CPR training consisted of a 40 minute video, a quiz, and in class teaching which was rushed through our last day and we did not do any hands on. With this, I feel ginormous corners were cut.
After completing the course and applying for jobs, interviewers were very surprised to learn we completed 24 clinical hours in a very small 6 bed privately owned assisted living facility.
There were three others in my class who felt the same with the teaching, lack of structure, and lack of hands on. I am thrilled to have passed the state exam, however I feel ill prepared for this career. It may have been an off month for the institute, but I feel inclined to leave this review as it was not only myself that felt this way about the course. I am saddened by this experience and very regretful to have chosen Horizon Healthcare Institute for the...
Read moreHorizon Health Care Institute- Melbourne. This institution offered me everything and more.. A knowledgeable and capable instructor, hands on learning, great curriculum and a positive community! The environment alone was something I enjoyed so much, its welcoming and uplifting and so positive.. They truly thrive off of their students success and happiness. Mrs. Dominique herself showed me so much grace and support through my time there.. she did everything possible to make sure that as long as I was committed and determined - that I would make it through my program successfully. Personally- I had a situation arise to where I was unable to get my number of sticks necessary to complete my Phlebotomy program.. she graciously allowed me back into another class to complete the physical part of the course. Without that opportunity I would not have completed my program successfully.. and of course this was not something she or the school owed me in any way. I am forever grateful for that opportunity.. So if you are trying to choose your campus/ institute to go for you certifications.. I 1000% recommend without a doubt Horizon...
