OHD Studios — Local services in Mifflin Township

OhioHD is my go-to for all gear, studio and crew needs and an all around incredible place. Most importantly they are reliable, flexible and responsive. I can ALWAYS count on them to get me what I need and when I need it, working well and perfectly prepped.

But they're so much more than just a rental house; they've also been a great partner along my journey as a DP, helping me learn new gear before a big shoot and offering solutions for to pull off ever-more complex production setups. I've come to rely on their expertise as much as the gear they offer.

Increasingly we've been using OhioHD crews on larger productions, as they really know their stuff and can help us scale as needed.

Gear rental:

Always up-to-date with the best new gear. The staff know their technology inside-out and have always been great at helping me learn new tools when prepping for a shoot, which gives me the confidence to try new things and continue to grow as a filmmaker. I've done both shipping and in-person pick-ups and both have been 100% reliable and seamless. The reason I prefer them over other places, including online services, is that their camera packages come with everything you need to start shooting. Some places rent each component separately (batteries, cables, etc.) and leave it up to you to build the package ala carte, which makes me nervous that I could forget something and blow a shoot. OhioHD packages are well composed and they've always followed up if I overlooked something. In this respect, I think their prices, which are already great, net out much better than competitors because the price reflects a complete package.

Studio:

I've done a couple multi-day shoots in their new studio and it's an amazing space! Perfect for the food work I've done, with a beautiful and accessible kitchen as well. Clients loved the space, as did our crew. Their staff is helpful and accommodating, which made us feel right at home and we were able too add lights and other gear as the complexity of our setups grew. The facilities are brand new and very nice, capable of handling any size production.

Crews:

I've worked with their audio technician, gaffer, AC and various grips on many shoots. All very talented and professional crew who added value to our productions. Working on commercials with clients present, I've always felt the OhioHD crews represented us well and integrated seamlessly with our own team. These guys know their stuff and it's extra helpful to have a couple of their crew on set when renting a grip truck since they know their own gear so well. Their audio guy, Ryan, is outstanding in the field and so quick to mic talent in any situation that you never even know he's there. Audio has always been perfect, which blows my mind given some of the challenges we've thrown at him! I always pick up a few new tricks from these guys on set; they're an invaluable asset and I really recommend getting to know them!

Overall:

OhioHD is an amazing group of folks with to notch gear and facilities. Best in the market and definitely worth trying. Most importantly, with so much at stake on a production, they are reliable, professional and easy to communicate with. They will, without a doubt, help take your production to...

My crew called OHD and spoke with a customer service rep to ensure we had the right equipment. We ended up with lights and audio not working. The audio equipment was malfunctioning and drained the batteries. When I told them about these issues they told me that they normally work with professionals and not amateurs. The owner and team told me that the batteries dying is my responsibility. Owner offered me some generic "discount" if I used them again in the future but never actually made an offer.

The owner and I spoke on the phone because he didn't like the one-star review and he said they did something wrong but largely these issues were my fault. He then followed up weeks later with an email asking me to take down my one-star review. I told him I think it accurately reflects my experience.

I spent a fortune on actors, crew, and location and the equipment I rented from OHD didn't meet basic expectations. I hope they evaluate their systems and processes because they seriously need to do better and own...
