Go to the bottom for a quick summary. The Station is not without faults, but it is absolutely fantastic overall. I paid ~$600 a month to share a bedroom in a 2-bedroom apartment (currently listed as "The Two 3" on their website). That's pricey, but it's worth every penny. The location is the best you can get, service is excellent, and the apartments are stylish, well laid-out, and comfortable.
Since it has been mentioned in other reviews: We had an issue with a homeless guy sneaking into the lobby and smoking(!) there. They hired a security company to monitor the lobby at night. Never had a problem again.
The maintenance guy at The Station is outstanding. He is friendly, and he gets the job done right the first time. That alone is worth the difference in price between The Station and cheaper student apartments.
The office's hours are reasonable, and they respond to emails quickly. The online resident portal is a bit clunky- just make sure you give yourself a bit of time to get everything set up.
Near the end of my lease, my bike got stolen from the garage. I had only locked the front wheel, though, so I was an easy target. Similar things have happened at other apartments I have lived in. Given how The Station is excellent in pretty much every other way, it is rather odd that they are only average on the "parking garage security" front. Some cameras around the bike racks (and a big, scary "this area is under surveillance" sign) would be a big improvement.
The appliances were significantly better than those I have seen in most other student apartments. They were also reliable- we never needed to submit a maintenance ticket related to the oven, fridge, or microwave. Also, the thermostat actually worked, which is better than I can say for apartments I have lived in previously.
The couches had seen better days, but were not worn out or abused. The TV stand was barely big enough to fit my large stereo equipment. For normal audio/home theater systems, it would be perfectly fine. The chairs, desks, end table, coffee table, and dressers that came with the apartment matched and were in good condition.
The beds were comfortable and clean. Like many other student apartments, bunk beds at The Station are essentially two normal beds stacked on top of each other with big brackets holding them together. We tightly wrapped some rope around the top of the bunk bed where the side guard rail attaches to the bedpost- this got rid of most creaks and rattles. The bedrooms were bigger than I had expected, and were laid out in a way that made it easy for two people to share a room.
The bathrooms were well laid out and had plenty of storage. At 6'2", I was able to use the shower without bending over. Anyone shorter than 6'5" should be able to use the showers comfortably. If you've ever had to literally bend over backwards to wash your hair, you know this is very high praise.
One of the most impressive things about The Station is the sound isolation between apartments. We had large speakers, and could use them without complaints. I only heard our neighbors a couple of times in the 12 months I lived there, and even then it was still very faint.
I'm splitting hairs now, but the elevators had some weird problems from time to time. Sometimes, one of them would decide it doesn't want to move for the day. Once in a while, you'll tell it to go down, but it'll go up then stop at a random floor without opening the door (pressing the button for your floor again will make it go where it's supposed to). These problems did not happen regularly enough to be serious. As far as I know, nobody ever got stuck in the elevators.
tl;dr: My only complaints with The Station are the average security of the parking garage, and the elevators having a mind of their own. Neither of these problems overshadows the outstanding service, high quality living spaces, and excellent location. If you can afford to live at The Station, it is...
Read moreThe Station is definitely the best apartment around campus! I both lived and worked in this building (only moved out bc I graduated).
As a resident, I found the building to be much cleaner and quieter than the other properties I had previously stayed in . The furniture in the unit was nice quality and everything worked properly. If anything did break, the maintenance team was able to take a look and fix it either the same day I put in the request or within the next day! Staff is very responsive to any issues the residents have. The resident events are very fun and creative. (This is not exactly about the property, but the other residents are also very nice).
As an employee, I absolutely loved working here! My coworkers are super nice and the workplace has a great balance of a fun and casual environment while still making sure all work gets done. The residents are lovely and often will stop by to chat for a bit. It is also very interesting to see the active effort to help residents from the office perspective as compared to a resident perspective. The office definitely makes a lot of behind the scenes effort that residents might not even realise. We make sure that every issue that residents have are solved as best we possibly can. Amenities wise, we have an amazing grounds-keeping and maintenance team who work very hard to keep the building in peak condition. Every year between leases, the units get deep cleaned, any damaged furniture is replaced, and each unit gets multiple inspections before we deem it ready for new residents, to make sure residents are getting the best quality of life.
Overall, The Station is definitely one of the best apartments in the area and I wish I had stayed...
Read moreMy son signed at "The Station" at the beginning of the school year and we couldn't be happier. The things that are important, they have really came through for us! 1. SECURITY: it is a secure building, and has friendly office staff in the lobby 2. LOCATION It is located in a safe and central part of UMN campus ,a short walk to all of his classes. Also, there is a Walgreens downstairs so he can pick up things like milk, TP, or other things. There are also two coffee shops and some eateries on the same street. 3. CLEANLINESS - Every single time I have visited (several times in last few months) the common areas are very clean and well maintained and my son said that is normal. 4. MAINTENANCE: Very attentive, he had an issue where he thought his refrigerator wasn't keeping things chilled well enough (was just a matter of adjusting temp) they were SO QUICK! 5. EASE - the rental payment system, utility payment, etc is so easy, we have not had one issue. 6. AMMENITIES: He has a full gym, community office space with free copier (provide your own paper) and work space if he needs it, and mail room as well as a community room for get togethers. He is in a studio apt and it has an in unit laundry, all kitchen appliances (full size refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, full size range) It is a great place for his first...
