My wife and I relocated to the Mooresville area from another state, and have attended three different Planet Fitness' in the past two years. Each gym operates a little differently (as they are franchised), and we have found out the Statesville and Mooresville locations, along with some others in the area, are owned by the same people. However, the two clubs themselves operate differently as well.
Of all the clubs we've been to, the Mooresville location is our least favored. Unfortunately for us, it is the closest. We have noticed that the cleaning schedule is less diligently focused than the Statesville location, and the equipment is not as well maintained.
It is also apparent that the staff has little interest in handling problems outside the scope of their daily routines. To be fair, this shouldn't be a blanket statement of all the staff. It has just been the ones we've encountered. As an example, we usually do the 30-minute workout 2-3 times per week but noticed the timer is on an accelerated pace. There are 60 seconds in which to do each of the 20 stations but instead of a 30-second rest in between, it is set at 15-seconds. To an outsider this may not seem like a huge deal, but when you progress to the next station and need to adjust the machine to your body size and set the weight, 15 seconds goes by extremely quick. This does not take into account having someone at the machine that you are moving to. Once the 60-seconds is up, they are responsible to wipe the machine down, further cutting in to your 15-second gap. This is not to overlook that fatigue sets in and 15 seconds does not offer a suitable amount of time to rest in between stations. We have repeatedly told the staff that the timer is supposed to be set at 30-second intervals in between the stations, including one so-called "personal trainer" that very humorously replied "if it were set at 30 seconds, it would take longer than 30 minutes to complete." Evidently, personal trainers are not required to be good at math. Thankfully for the club, she is no longer there. But nearly a year in, the timer has still not changed. Ironically, the Statesville store has no issues with their 30-min circuit. Unfortunately, we have discontinued use of the 30-minute circuit, partly because of the timer issue but also because there are an obscene amount of loiterers that consistently occupy one piece of equipment in the circuit, despite the signs asking them not to. As the sign eludes, the circuit is designed as a complete workout and it is expected that those participating in it should be able to do so unimpeded. Unfortunately, people either can't read or choose to ignore the signs, showing little regard for those trying to use it as intended. We simply got tired of fighting.
Regarding housekeeping, often times there are paper towels missing from the receptacles and in the bathrooms. And the mens room in particular just constantly seems dirty. In addition, several pieces of equipment have needed maintenance but just as before, telling staff about it goes nowhere. They simply move the machine to the end of the row.
On another note, the gym could stand to have some window tint or sunshades installed. On bright and sunny Carolina days, the sun radiates off the pavement and curbing so badly that looking anywhere but down will cause terrible glaring. On the lower level, the sun beats directly in on the exercise bikes. The Statesville club is a better option if you...
Read moreI have been a member of Planet Fitness since 2017, and I did NOT request to cancel my membership. Unfortunately, recently transferred to this location. I have been to Planet Fitness locations all over the country and I have never been harassed by members or staff until I came to this gym.
I have had members use equipment I was actively using while there was identical and available equipment adjacent to the equipment I was using, trying to bully me off of the piece of equipment I was using. I have had members invade my personal space and use equipment that clearly had my personal belongings on it. I have had members be creepy and lean on a smith machine I was actively using even though there was 3 other smith machines available. These are just a few instances out of many! I’ve even had a member drink out of my personal beverage that definitely is not sold at this location, or any Planet Fitness location I’ve ever been to.
I couldn’t figure out why this location is so creepy, but it’s because the general manager Matt Chastain doesn’t take complaints from women seriously. He just sides with creepy men that lack boundaries and it has created a horrible gym culture at this location over the years. He will refuse to communicate via email and just try to cancel your membership for no reason.
If Mooresville Planet Fitness responds to this review publicly to say, tells me to “please reach out to discuss this”, please believe me when I say that they do not mean it. I sent them an email with my complaints and they responded to my email with a membership cancellation.
In “response”, Mooresville Planet Fitness sent me an email with an attached document that stated there was a “cancellation of my membership” due to a “policy violation”. WHAT POLICY WAS VIOLATED? MY EMAIL WAS NEVER ADDRESSED AND THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO EXPLANATION OF ANY POLICY BEING VIOLATED . There was no reason to try to cancel my membership and the document they sent me was a forged document without my own signature stating a cancellation of my membership.
At this location, you aren’t allowed to stand up for yourself or let staff members know you’re being harassed. If you communicate with staff members, they will target you and it will lead to an escalation of harassment from the staff and an attempt cancel your membership without your consent.
I absolutely feel discriminated against and harassed.
This location is absolutely disgusting.
I repeat, if you are a woman, YOU ARE NOT SAFE AT THIS LOCATION. This location...
Read moreFirst of all they did me completely wrong with my contract. I paid someone directly $20 and they said they couldn't give me a receipt, they told me there was no way to print it out... The next time I went in there they said I still owed that amount. Also when I first signed up I marked it in my phone so that I knew when my contact would end. When the year was over and I wanted to leave they told me my contact wasn't over for either 2 or 4 more months. I knew that couldn't be true because I put the exact end date in my phone the day I signed up! Not to mention the ridiculous rules they have. They think they are a cool, hip gym that "doesn't judge" but they do absolutely judge, and they are unbelievably obnoxious about it! In the weight room they have a "lunk alarm" that goes off if you drop a weight! It's the most obnoxious thing I've ever seen. I'm sure that those poor men/women who lift super heavy and want to get just one more rep are afraid to do so for fear that dumb alarm will go off. That's totally embarrassing. It's super loud and everyone looks over there to see who it was, it's completely ridiculous. Also, they have little areas where they focus on a specific muscle group (such as abs or legs) and the machines go in a circle. One time I was doing some ab workouts but skipped one or two of the machines in the circle. Their was another man doing the same thing, going in the circle and not taking too much time and then skipping one of he didn't need it. Well, some lady who worked there came and scolded us and told us that we couldn't do the circle unless we did each machine. Are you kidding me? Lol needless to say that was the day I decided to stop going to that ridiculous gym. Ive never in my life been to a gym this bad. It's more like a daycare center than a gym. Not to mention the tanning beds suck, they're not even worth the 10 extra dollars a month. Don't let the cheap price fool you into getting a membership!
P.s. if you lift super heavy weights they don't even have enough weight to accommodate you. My boyfriend went there with me and couldn't do much of anything. (He's got a little more muscle than the average guy but nothing...
