Christmas Mouse — Local services in Nags Head

Each year on our summer vacation, we get our boys a Christmas ornament to remember something special we did that year. This summer, we visited the OBX and checked out a few Christmas stores with a huge variety of ornaments. At Christmas Mouse, we found exactly what we were looking for; a Santa riding a jet ski, just like we did this past week.

The store had signs about personalization, so at checkout, I politely asked if they could add my son’s name to the ornament, as it already had “Outer Banks” written on it. The woman at the counter responded, somewhat snarkily, “Where do you see space to write it?” I suggested the opposite side from the existing text.

At that moment, she accidentally dropped the ornament on the counter. She picked it up, wrote the name, and placed it in a bag. After paying, my son suggested we check it to make sure it wasn’t damaged from the drop. Unfortunately, we found a small chip on the back.

I brought it back in and asked if I could exchange it. The same two women at the front, who had been there when it was dropped, acted surprised and asked where the chip was. I pointed out the issue and mentioned it was probably from the drop. The woman who had dropped it waved her hand and said, “Fine, but I’m not writing on it.” I told her that was no problem and swapped it out myself.

I completely understand that accidents happen. What bothered me was the attitude, don’t act surprised that a ceramic ornament chipped when dropped on a hard surface. It wasn’t damaged beforehand, and I certainly wasn’t making it up.

This store has a vast and impressive collection of Christmas ornaments and decorations. However, this particular store is located at the birthplace of aviation, the spot where Orville and Wilbur Wright 1st flew a manned, powered aircraft in 1903 and they ONLY had 1 SINGLE, SOLITARY ORNAMENT commemorating that fact and it was a glass ball with a picture on it. There were NO WRIGHT FLYERS! It shows a grievous lack of foresight in relation to the location of this store! The closest thing they had to it was a German biplane missing the vertical stabilizer and rudder (I know this was a design flaw because there were at least 4 identical except for color). I would have a very much higher opinion of this store if it were located 100 miles further away but my low rating is purely because of their obvious ignorance of their location. Been shopping at this location for over a decade buying thousands of dollars worth of old world Christmas ornaments. My husband and I collection them and gift one each year to our relatives and friends. Just had my first experience where the associate argued with me about having a box for the ornament i was purchasing. These ornaments are extremely fragile glass and can cost up to $30-$40 each. The store has always put them in the loose boxes they have under the counter. But telling me I cannot have one for a $30 ornament is crazy. I will be forced to buy them from Amazon or directly from Merke’s since they arrive customarily...
