Updated review 8/29/23 - My friends made fun of me that I didn't know how to repair/change my tire when out riding a few days I had a flat and had to walk home. They sent me youtube videos and even long text threads in an attempt to teach me how to do change the tire but I told them I would rather take my bike to the bike shop. It definitely was the right decision -first Jamie the manager and then Josiah the mechanic helped remove and replace the tire, but both also went above and beyond simple service in explaining each step of the process, replacing the seal on my pressure valve, and making sure I knew how to make sure my tires were at the right pressure. For $15 in labor and $15 for the tube, it was well worth the education and the personal and personable customer service. And from the way everyone teased each other (but never me, the ignorant casual cyclist!) it was clear that they really enjoyed their work.
I want to give a shout out to Oak at the Newton/Needham Landry's location. The service department was obviously very busy but Oak changed out two broken/bent Preston valve tips, examined my tubeless tires and pronounced them good to go. He was very personable and patient while listening to my description of sealant spewing out while trying to inflate my tires and told me that leaking air pressure from tubeless tires was to be expected He did not charge me for his time or the valve tips or try to sell me new tires. A young salesman on the floor , whose name I did not catch, also was very helpful in helping me selecting a helmet that comfortably fit my enormously wide head. All in all - a truly amazing customer experience, I couldn't have asked for more personalized attention. Kudos, Landry's in Newton!!!
Update: I had the opportunity to go in on7/17/22 for another service request to replace a rear tire that was damaged. Another great customer service experience. Thea was wonderful, answered my questions and my tire was replaced promptly with...
Read moreThis 1-star review is for the quality of a tune-up and also how I was treated by Jamie, one of the front desk staff members who was incredibly rude and dismissive when I came to pick up my bike after having some service done. At one point he said, “I’m done talking to you,” and started ignoring me mid sentence.
For the back story, I had to bring my bike back due to problems after a tune up* and the mechanics had been trying to get it back to me with a quick turnaround. I had called a couple of times to inquire about the progress and see when I could pick it up since I needed it to commute for work that night (I work overnights).
When Jamie saw that I had called several times and had had issues with the tune up, his demeanor and interactions with me completely changed. He became short with me and stopped answering my questions, such as if I could get some of my replaced parts back or what what was included in the different levels of tune-ups (I was planning on bringing another bike in for service that needed more help than the basic tune-up included). He then stopped interacting with me completely, started actively ignoring me, and helping the customers behind me instead as if I wasn't even there.
Sadly, this is not my first bad interaction at Landry’s but this was certainly the worst. I’ve been bringing my bikes here ever since I moved to Boston but will have to find another shop from now on and will steer others away from them. I understand they’re busy but that’s no way to treat anybody.
*In addition to this terrible interaction, they also made the brakes worse after the tune-up. I came within 2 inches of getting hit by a car after picking up my bike because I wasn't able to brake in time due to the brakes barely working. You'd think they'd check the bike before handing it back to the customer, but somehow this was missed....
Read moreI had a bike built over the last year by Landry’s Newton. Needless to say I was very excited to pick up the bike and ride it. After riding for a couple months and crashing twice I brought my bike to another bike shop. This bike shop informed me that the rear cog on the bicycle was the wrong cog for the bicycle it was a multi speed cog and my bicycle is a single speed. The multi speed cog was causing my bike chain to jump off the cog during heavy peddling of the bicycle causing me to crash violently. I ended up with multiple scrapes fractured hand and now scars. I brought this up to Thea Church at Landry’s in Newton. Instead of apologizing after realizing that the cog put on my bicycle was not even in fact the cog that was on my receipt she was very defensive and tried to claim that even though the cog was in fact not the matching cog that I paid for it was still a viable option for the bicycle. Till this day they still have not Refunded me the money for the original cog I purchased that they didn’t even give me they haven’t paid for the new cog I had to go To another bike shop to have put on. During the whole time I spoke to Miss church she went out of her way to attempt to blame the accident on me even though it was obvious the parts she put on my Bicycle were subpar and not meant for my bicycle on top of the fact it’s not even the part I paid for. If I could give this business less than one star I would. How is it that you build a bicycle with parts that don’t even reflect the parts on the receipt that the customer paid for.I would suggest going to another bicycle shop beware of this business they have absolutely no regard for injuries incurred at...
