Though it took a week for maintenance to come after filing a request, i am truly impressed by their professionalism in fixing my stuffs. Initially i just filed a request for fixing the balcony door, however over the weeks, i had a few more issues such as light bulb, main door knob and a hole in my fly screen. However, all of them were fixed by the maintenance team (Antonio Lopez,Willie Hanna) which i am really satisfied with. They were really friendly and helpful too
Edit: Wrote the review above back in 2021 when I just moved into NHT and below is my updated review of the place after staying there for 2 years
Overall I enjoyed the whole experience of living in NHT. It was a great experience from the documentations to moving out. Due to COVID in 2021, I was unable to view the apartment in person. However Edward (the renting manager) sent me pictures of the apartment and helped me with my queries. While he didn't sound friendly on the phone at first, he is actually a really nice person
Location If you are working at New haven hospital or somewhere around the vicinity, I will highly recommend this place. It is literally a 5 to 10 minutes walk to the hospital so you don't have to buy a car if you are planning obly to be here short term. Also there is a walgreen convenience store just beside the apartment Relative to living in east rock, there are tons of restaurants and food places nearby ranging from shake shack or prime 16 (if u crave for burgers) to taste of China or bonchon or ramen (if u crave for Asian food). All of them are within walking distance (20 mins walk max). There is an Asian grocery store at Crown Street which is 10 mins walk away and if you want a larger one, you can walk approximately 25 mins to the Hong Kong market at Whitney Avenue. Otherwise just take an uber to G Mart. Unfortunately there is no local grocery store nearby except for stop and shop which is pretty long walking distance (you can take the Yale shuttle bus which is just located at 123 York Street) or take a bus to Walmart at Foxon Avenue or take the weekend yale shuttle bus to trader Joe
Apartment For my studio apartment, it comes unfurnished, the only thing provided is a stove and fridge and 2 air conditioner/heater. It is pretty huge for me since I'm someone who doesn't buy or possess lots of things so there were lots of empty spaces. Heating and water is free but most of the time I don't really feel the heating in my room hence I will have to turn on the heater. NHT provide maintenance which is really awesome since I am someone who have no idea how to change a light bulb or fix a choked toilet bowl. Though some of the non urgent requests may take time, the urgent ones such as choked toilet bowl are settled within the day NHT staffs also shovel the snow on the walkway whenever there is an accumulation of snow which I think is really great. There is also a laundry room at the basement floor so it is pretty convenient. The washing machine or dryer cost $2.25 each and they can be paid via card or the app (don't bother using coins as it may not work) There is a dental clinic at level 3 and 4 within Crown tower,so if you have signed up for insurance which is under these dental clinics, it will be extremely convenient for you. There is a gym which is available to people living in Crown court/towers and high street so this saves your monthly gym fees The only downside is the thickness of the walls in the apartment; they are kind of thin. So you unintentionally get to hear your neighbour's gossip and sometimes if they were to hold a party you will be "enjoying" it with them or even when they are doing some loud banging activities in the middle of the night (did I mention I lived alone? T.T)
Price The price is definitely higher than other places especially if you are comparing it to the apartments at east rock. It was $1500 in 2021 and nearly $1700 in 2023 (this does not include the electricity and WiFi bills which is an additional $100). However I reckon that the convenience beats the...
Read moreI would like to post here a complaint against the rental manager of the New Haven Towers, Mr. Edward. I've had the worst experience with this person. If I could give this place negative stars I would.
First, I called him for the availability of an apartment and to schedule a viewing. He sounded completely uninterested in what I had to say and suggested that they didn't have anything for me. I said that I was a new Yale student at the Divinity School. He said that the Towers were too far from the Divinity School and that I could find better deals somewhere closer, but I insisted that I knew New Haven, that I liked the location and that distance was not a problem. Then I said that my move in date was in August, he replied nothing in August, but perhaps there was something on August 20, and I said that that was okay because my program starts later at the end of the month. However, in the most disrespectful manner, he insinuated that I didn't know the schedule of my program and that most probably there was an orientation period before that date (which is false).
During our whole phone interaction, I felt discriminated against because of my accent, which clearly shows that I am not American, but Spanish. And I felt that he just didn't want me to rent any of the apartments. He was trying hard to put me down, suggesting that I did not know the city nor my own Yale program. Then, he said that he was going to check and call me later to confirm the availability of that room. He never did. I also asked him for a room with balcony, he said there wasn't any available. The next day, I called back, no answer. I called a second time, finally, he answered and said he has one apartment available for the 18th of August, so I scheduled a viewing.
I came with my wife and my parents-in-law, who are South Indian, brown-skin and have an Indian accent. My wife is also brown, but American with an American accent. I told her how I felt during our phone call, so I told her to be careful and I let her lead this conversation. He emphasized how busy he was, but he said that he has something to show us. He says it is the apartment with balcony (the one that he had told me it wasn't available). We go there, we all liked it. But Edward seemed irritated with us for no reason. For every question we made, he seemed more and more upset. He was very unprofessional and not client friendly.
He had told us we were seeing an apartment which was a duplicate layout of the apartment that was available which we could not see at the time because the tenant was doing business in the apartment. When my mother in law asked him if the apartment we were viewing, which was empty, was also available, he assumed she didn't understand the explanation he gave earlier. He got irritated, raised his voice and used hand signals as if she was stupid to explain the situation again. My mother in law speaks three languages and has a masters in biochemistry - he treated her like she was an idiot. My wife at that point interjected, called him out on his rude, disrespectful and racist behavior. He says "oh it's not a racist thing. There are so many international people living here. I'm not being racist." He looked at my wife and said: "It's frustrating to have to explain the same thing three times. I thought you would jump in and help me at some point" as if my wife, having the American accent, makes her the only one that understands him in the group. If we wanted to ask the same question 10 times, he should have answered because that's good customer behavior.
We are reporting his behavior to the better business bureau for further investigation as well as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. We are outraged at this experience. He should not be working at this establishment and this kind of behavior should not be tolerated in...
Read moreMy husband and I lived in New Haven Towers for a combined total of 11 years - he for 5 years in med school, and both of us for another 3 years as I finished my residency here. I can't imagine a better place to live. I've lived all over New Haven, in East Rock, other luxury developments, and other buildings downtown. Crown Towers is by far the best option out of all.
Crown Towers is ideally located with an entrance on High Street, steps away from the heart of the Yale campus and gorgeous gothic architecture. Even a few blocks away, the walk just isn't as scenic (more concrete). It is steps away from all the downtown restaurants, and friends who live nearby. It is a 5-minute walk to Yale New Haven Hospital (and I walked that way alone as a petite woman at 2 and 3am on countless occasions over the years without incident) - the convenience was essential for taking call from home. Others who live a little further need to drive to work and use the call rooms overnight. Being just a little further from the hospital means parking in the garage and an extra 15 minutes getting down the elevator from that massive structure, so it's really ideal to be able to walk. Also nice to have virtually no commute on snow days. In terms of sound insulation, it is off the ambulance routes, and high enough up that there is virtually no street noise from downtown (or as little as you will get anywhere downtown). My 15th floor apartment was quieter than East Rock, where I could hear the Yale Shuttle stopping in front of my apartment every 15 minutes. I occasionally hear my neighbors, but not more than I would in any other apartment building. Madison Towers is also very quiet, though I've heard Crown Court has a little more street noise (if facing the street not courtyard).
The maintenance staff is amazing. They always respond the very next day to service requests placed online. I know many of the maintenance staff by name, we always greet each other. Antonio once scrubbed, polished and caulked my bathtub when responding to a faucet leak, and left a nice note that he had been there. It looked like new.
We took over our apartment from a graduating law student. The unit has floor-to-ceiling windows from which I can view a gorgeous horizon that stretches from Sleeping Giant all the way to the Long Island Sound and a panoramic view of the Yale campus. The generous balcony has been great for hosting July 4 parties and outdoors breakfast gatherings. All the other tenants on the floor this year are medical students, resident physicians, scientists or fellows. The atmosphere is very quiet and respectful. The community has been incredibly warm and welcoming to my young daughter, and being amongst such wonderful people has been great for her social development during Covid. Having the Yale campus as our backyard has been an extra bonus. I couldn't be more grateful for this amazing community and the quiet, restful and kind setting it provided me and my family over the course of my...
