I wasnât going to post anything because I really hate being that person, but after Iâve done my research and heard first hand where I got my dog from it breaks my heart. I adopted my dog last year in December. They posted pictures of puppies and I called to inquire, went down to the shelter and put in an application. When I was there I asked if I could see the puppies to hold whichever one we liked for when they went to get fixed and vetted, etc. I was told I could not see them because they were not yet vetted, totally understandable, so I asked if I could just look rather than play with them, and was still told no. I found this very odd, being that I had never experienced that and have volunteered at several shelters. I shrugged it off and waited until I was approved. None of my references were called, and I got a random text a week later saying I could pick the puppy up that night on New Yearâs Eve. My boyfriend and I went to pick her up, and out of the apparent â4 or 5â that were supposed to be there there were only 2 left with their mother. These poor puppies and their mom were TERRIFIED. They were shaking in their cage and cowered from us when we went in to meet them, I was in tears I felt so bad for them. There were TONS of puppies in these kennels, which I found extremely odd, again my many years of volunteering never saw constant Inflows of that many puppies before. A woman took my $300 and handed me the puppy we picked out. She was so scared and shaking she peed on me, and I began asking questions. One girl told me they were trapped in the woods in West Virginia? Then another said they were rescued from a puppy mill? And another said they were just shy. Well which story is it? If any of those were true. The sad thing is is that this wouldnât have stopped me from adopting her, it wouldâve just been nice to get some tips and pointers on how I could help her to be more comfortable and how to make this transition as smooth as possible. We were told nothing until I started asking questions. We were told she was fixed, dewormed, and vetted, etc. they also told me she was 8 weeks old. When we got her home she cowered in a corner for almost 3 weeks, terrified especially of men. I took her to the vet and she had parasites which I had to pay for, and was told she was at least 3-4 months old and almost had all of her adult teeth! Itâs now been a year and she is still terrified of people, and still scared of my boyfriend. She hates men, but warms up to women and is attached to my hip. I love her more than anything but canât imagine where she came from. Itâs truly heartbreaking. Something very shady is going on with this shelter and I will never support them again, and have spoken to many others who know way more...I wonât post on here the truth of what I was told because itâs not my place. All red flags and something should be done about it so that no other poor animals...
Read moreRegarding Pet Adoption League in Yukon, PA. My family and I disregarded multiple bad reviews and decided to try and adopt a dog using them. I feel terrible posting this for fear it affects the chances of these dogs finding good homes, but I feel like it really needs to be said.
Multiple customers of theirs stated that dogs were getting adopted after they were promised a dog. We went to pick up a dog on Sunday, and were expecting to take her home. Shortly after we arrived they told us that Sydney Rose (St Bernard) did not receive her heart worm test and could not be adopted out. No big deal, though annoying considering the drive out and time wasted when told we could pick her up.
Wednesday I message them asking what was up with Sydney's heart worm test. They informed me that the dog had a seizure and was no longer adoptable. Of course we were sad about the situation, but we then started thinking about all those bad reviews. So I had a friend call them from out of town and inquire about Sydney. They told him that she was indeed still up for adoption and to come in and meet her. She was at a fosters.
Infuriated, we call the shelter to inquire about Sydney ourselves. The shelter gave us the number of the foster. The foster informs us that Sydney did in fact have a seizure, but they were not 100% sure that is was a seizure and needed to be vetted, but people we still coming to see her and inquiring about adopting her.
The foster then told us to call the director. We called, no answer. My wife messaged them via facebook asking what was going on. They replied via facebook saying that they did not feel comfortable letting us adopt Sydney Rose because our 6 year old son was "too rambunctious".
Though this is understandable, we feel that the situation was handled VERY VERY poorly, this should have been communicated when we met her, or on Sunday when we went to pick her up. So I sent them a message explaining that on facebook. They replied "How else should we have handled the situation", then blocked me on messenger.
I can understand not being comfortable with certain living situations for certain kinds of dogs and their background, but to expect to bring a dog home, becoming emotionally attached, buying things for her, and that ripping all that away without an explanation, I think is inexcusable.
If you're planning on adopting a dog through this organization, by all means, please do. These poor puppies need homes. But do NOT get your hopes up, because this has happened in one shape or form NUMEROUS times to many...
Read moreI saw a puppy on their page that I was very interested in meeting on Friday of last week. They were closed until Sunday. So many people were commenting on her and asking about her, I figured there was no way she would still be there. I contacted them Sunday and asked if she was still adoptable, and they told me that she was in fact still there, and that they were hosting meet and greets with her that day and accepting applications only that day. So we went the entire way there, and we had the chance to meet her. I felt a great vibe from her and it was love at first sight. I filled out and turned in an application for her. The lady told me that they werenât open again until Wednesday, and that I may hear something from them before then. She also told me to send a message to the director that night asking the status of my application. I did, and never received a reply back. Monday and Tuesday I waited just to hear nothing. Wednesday came along, the day they were open again, and I called them once more asking on my status. No answer, left a message and they never called me back. I had to send another text to the director that day after 2.5 hours of them being open and not hearing anything. The director told me that they had more meet n greets set up for that day, and it was told to me that they were only taking them that Sunday when I applied for her and was the only one. Later that night they texted me and asked me when I wanted to pick her up. We went and got her that night. Her kennel was disgusting, not cleaned at all. When we took her home, she smelled awful and we instantly bathed her. The water was dark brown. It took us multiple baths to get her even somewhat clean. I truly feel that I saved this dog from a bad life before the shelter, and from the shelter itself, and she is so happy and loved in...
