BBG is a great BBQ spot in New Stanton. I was born in GA so I never really expect much from northern BBQ. With that being said BBG has some great sauce. It's the vinegar tomato based sauce and is made in house. Great flavor and a nice tanginess make it a must try. The pulled pork rice bowl is my personal favorite, however all the meat is well smoked and never too dry. The sweet potatoes are absolutely amazing the sweet brulee on the top is to die for. I'm not entirely sure what it's made of, certainly sugar and perhaps a bit of flour. The cornbread has sugar in it as well, so all southerns should probably avoid it if you are looking for salty dry corn bread look elsewhere, that being said it is good sweet semi moist bread in it's own right. All the meats are available as a sandwich, a rice bowl or a salad. Each meal comes with a choice of two sides. The white potatoes are good but as previously stated the sweet potatoes are a must try. Always ask for extra sauce if eating out, dining in the sauce is at each table. It's not Texas or South Carolina but for South Western Pennsyltucky it's some good smoked meat with a very tasty house made sauce. BBQ is a very devisive food, so at the end of the day it comes down to what you like. If mustard or jelly based sauces are your thing probably not the place for you. However the dry rubs are good and you can always bring your own sauce and enjoy it on your terms. They also do catering and I can say they do a great job. I've never dealt directly with the catering side as a customer, but I did attend a wedding that they catered and can tell you that everyone ate it up and asked for more. Next time your in New Stanton and looking for some meat sweats stop in and...
Read morePre-covid, BBG was great. Co-workers and I would go for lunch and everything was on point - especially the half chicken! (Picture of chicken meal from 2018)
My most recent experience a couple weeks ago was not so great. The menu is more limited. Ribs and smoked chicken are only available with 24 hour advanced notice. There are far fewer people. The atmosphere just wasn't the same. I can understand that business is probably slower and they are probably concentrating in fairs and other off-site events.
This recent food experience was not the greatest and not really excusable. Three sides were not ready, I think there were only 3 sides out at lunch time. There was no rice but we were allowed to order "bowls" which come on a bed of rice. The employee was very nice and said the rice was just getting finished in back and she would get it. My co-worker got white rice and I got dirty rice. I would have rather she just said the rice wasn't ready. We would have gotten a sandwich or salad. Either would have been better than eating semi-cooked rice. It was like eating gravel. I just ate the pulled pork off the top and threw the rest away. It was inedible. My co-worker doused it with extra sauce and forced it down. My cornbread and beans were pretty good.
I would give it another try, but I would order the chicken in advance and confirm that anything I ordered was ready to be served or not.
Hopefully my next experience will blow...
Read moreInitially was going to sit down and eat. Immediately felt like I wasn’t welcome there. The woman serving me had a terrible attitude. She spoke to me twice like I didn’t understand English. I got the pulled pork bowl on white rice with sweet and tangy coleslaw a little shredded cheese and pickled onion. Additionally I got a side of there mac n cheese and creamy coleslaw. When she finished dishing up my food she promptly wiped her gloved hands on her dirty apron and proceeded to ring me up. Wasn’t asked if I was dining in our carrying out(possibly customary).
This is my first and last visit to this place. One star because my food was cooked. The rice was hardly luke warm. The pork was pushing cold as well. The coleslaw was ok (the highlight of this bowl). The cheese tasted spoiled and the onions look old…thats old beyond the pickling process. If I wanted a half rack of ribs or half a chicken I would have to had ordered it at 1pm yesterday. Yes they need a 24hr notice. The mac n cheese screams velveeta and lacks flavor still. The creamy coleslaw tasted like a spoon of mayo. 85% of this meal went in the trash. I am disappointed and quite frankly a little disgusted by the attitude. When I paid I left a 15% tip …Usually I would tip $3-$5 for a tab less than $15… after leaving the tip this woman finally cracked half a smile and suddenly became helpful in pointing me to napkins and...
