Worse, and better, than I expected. It was smaller than I expected. A particular interest of mine is out-of-print novelty, and innovative 2Oth century recordings. Athough I read a review from someone who highlighted the breadth and depth of classical selections, I found the classical selection covered a couple of bins of common, or questionably classical selections - which may be attributed to either a lack of interesting material to put out for sale, high sales, or just the paucity of classical recordings. I found more interesting and more offerings at other shops. It was when I started to look around the store that I found the recent additions bins - items which, apparently, hadn't yet been filed in genre bins. There I found more of what I expected, including a previously unknown (to me) early Ingram Marshall recording, and a Somei Satoh recording. These were positively worth the trip. There were also some new vinyl classical recodings that caught my attention. I can well understand from the variety of fascinating discoveries in other genres why people love this place, and so I have to give this place a strong...
Read moreI've purchased there many times but because of the pandemic hadn't visited recently. I went there this past Saturday. They're only allowing 4 customers at a time in the store. You have to wait on line outside. For me the wait time was about 45 minutes. There were about 10 people behind me. I'm not complaining about the wait. It's to be expected in these times. I'm just glad the store is open and busy.
Once in the store I didn't find anything I really wanted. The jazz selection was particularly sparse. That's OK - it happens sometimes in the used record world. Maybe I just went at a bad time. But I've never come away from that store without finding something I wanted. I probably won't go back anytime soon, though. I seem to have better...
Read moreNYC is blessed to have such a phenomenal used record shop. I've been buying and selling records here since 2009. You are not going to find crap records at Academy. Any vinyl enthusiast visiting the city needs to make Academy a stop. And bring some $$ - you're gonna find something you need! The inventory is constantly evolving, which makes it necessary to come back again and again. Every day there are different, unexpected, exciting, totally unpredictable records out. Originality and condition are paramount at Academy. That said, you're just as likely to find a sweet, solid record for $8.00 as for $80.00...or $800.00. It doesn't matter your budget, they truly have something really, really nice...
