It is peak biking season in NYC, and I needed a tune up. Right now, most places are taking 1-2 weeks due to so many people taking their bikes out for the first time in half a year, but when I called, Bay Ridge Cycles, not only was my tune up affordable ($35 less than another cycle shop in South BK), it was done within 5 hours.
When I got there, I asked if they could also put fenders on my bike (as I biked there in the rain). They were able to fit mountain bike fenders to my bike, and they tried a few kinds - the main person I spoke to would tell me if a pair didn't fit, show me the new ones and any difference in price, explain how it would attach (to the seat stay VS the frame) and was able to cut them down to size for me and fit the specific pair I chose, all for $45.
Now, my bike rides smooth, the brakes feel brand new, and the chain is so clean and well-lubed it looks brand new too.
While I was waiting, I also saw them help several people. A person brought in an older bike and seemed to be having some issues with how it felt when shifting gears. They made adjustments. The customer said it felt okay, but asked if there was anything else the shop could do, or if they could ride it for another year without any further repair. The staff explained that even with the adjustment they made, a replacement of the cassette and chain were really what would be needed. Two mechanics even ride the bike down the street to test the adjustments. I know a little bit about bikes (I do some of my own minor repairs) and I watched as they did a great job explaining what and why would need replacing - they were accurate, kind, and very clear without pushing the customer to make a bigger repair. Ultimately the customer decided to leave it as it was, thanked them, and went on their way.
So many bike shops or staff can talk down to customers, especially older people or people who aren't burly men or men in spandex, so it was great to see this shop be so helpful to a customer without pushing a big repair for the money.
I'll definitely be coming back here with my other bike, any further repairs, or even if I want to buy a bike - I noticed some great models of all kinds in stock.
TL;DR: Bay Ridge Bicycles is a wonderful, quick, affordable shop with highly competent, kind staff who go above and beyond for their customers. They also have a wide variety of great models in stock if you are looking to buy a bike for someone...
Read moreI had a pedal that was almost fused to the crank arm. I already stripped the outside flathead. I really wanted this pedal off the bike.
I brought my bicycle to an other store before, where they said they can't do it, and I need a new crank arm. Which I didn't want.
So this shop's mechanic a spanish guy, did it. The threads were saved, and the bicycle suffered no harm. From a mechanical standpoint I'm happy with the results, and the price was good too.
About the store: its a small store, and its messy. An area where they can improve. Customer service: good, nice people work. No attitudes or whatsoever.
I'd recommend this store if you've some problem...
Read moreBEST BIKE SHOP! I HIGHLY recommend the service here and location to everyone! The shop owner of this business is a great person and he will give you a fair price for the repairs he does. He is also bilingual, and speaks English and Spanish. They fix things the same day!
I went recently to get my bike chain fixed, and he added air to my tires for free. He also was able to fix my unique bike seat at a low price. The entire time he was courteous and handled my bike with care.
