I don’t understand why there are so many complaints. I truly never planned on reviewing this place, but seeing the lack of truthfulness in most of these reviews I felt the urge to share my experience with The Consulate of Croatia NYC. People would rather bash an organization like this than address their own mistakes.
You have to plan your visit in advance (as it is the respectful thing to do), so I’d advise everyone to not continuously call them the day before/day of and to simply email them (it takes less time out of your day and they can address you when theyre available). They are here for emergencies, but you realizing you need a new passport because yours expired 10 years ago isnt an emergency. If you show up to their door for something like that, they will send you home with the classic “make an appointment” which is valid. I needed a last minute appointment for voting in the election and they helped me out with that in a veeery short amount of time. I emailed them Friday night hours after they finished with work and they got back to me on Monday two hours before the establishment officially opened for my urgent case. How many of these reviewers start work 2h earlier to help individuals with their case?
For some situations I’ve seen they’ve left individuals with more questions than answers, but from my personal experience the only thing those individuals had to do was ask questions at the end of their appointment. That can also be done through email if you’re under a time restriction, they usually answer the next business day.
This is a Consulate and as such you should treat the people inside with respect, if you do they will show you the same respect back in tenfold.
The ones talking about racism in Croatia? What are you on? This is a space to review the Consulate itself and not Croatia! I can only assume that they didn’t comprehend the situation they were in correctly since they couldn’t even comprehend how to review something. I’ve seen more racism in a month in NYC than in 20+ years in Croatia.
My only complaint is that they truly need a larger space and a receptionist, but that is due to the lack of funding from the Croatian government itself so please stop being so impatient in this small space. I only had a bad experience because of the nervous and confused individuals around me, which couldve been avoided only with additional funding to the Consulate itself ensuring enough money for a more comfortable space and a receptionist. The employees were exceptionally nice and made my time there splendid once I entered the room for my appointment and left the confusion behind.
Please stop blaming this organization over your own disorganization, do some research before travelling and email them for any questions related to what they can help you with. I was ultimately disorganized, but just writing out my problem to them solved absolutely everything which is what I expect from any great consulate like this one.
Thank you to the incredible workers for going above and beyond...
Read moreWarning: The Croatian customs is currently strongly racially discriminated against East Asian tourists.
We went into Croatia from a Schengen country on a Schengen visa, in theory there should be no customs.
BUT, we were the only people stopped by 2 customs officers, in the main hallway, under the eyes of every other passenger from our flight and the next, and they demand to inspect our passport.
We asked them what was wrong but they couldn’t answer, and they just wouldn’t let us go until 15min after.
We were being stared at by at least 100 other tourists as if we were illegal immigrants or something.
Considering the amount we contributed to the Croatia GDP in its poor economic situation, this is even more disgusting.
Consulate officers, could you answer this question of mine, that I just can’t seem to understand: why on earth, were we the only people in the hundreds of passengers on two flights, that got stopped and inspected like criminals?
If it were indeed “routine inspections “ as the officer claimed, at least they could lead us to an office, so that we won’t be stared at by hundreds of people?
Anyway, tourists with an Asian face, please reconsider Croatia as your next trip destination, if you do not want to suffer the same fate as us.
I read a lot of other reviews so I guess I am not alone. This country is helpless and is in an economic mess.
If you want to get better, start by respecting potential tourists from other much more powerful countries, who are much richer than you. Open your eyes to the world and just… learn some basic...
Read moreMy experience with Consulate was more than great ,as always. Extremely helpful and polite personnel and very responsive to our needs . We needed to extend our sons passport and since my husband is an executive chef, his working hours are impossible to match for any kind appointment, but Mrs. Irena went above and beyond to setup an appointment within my husbands hours. Whole process before and during the appointment was extremely easy and very well explained, without any hassle regarding what documents we need to bring with us. Since there are still active covid restrictions , everyone needs to come in on exact time of the appointment, and I must say I was positively surprised when we were admitted right on time and with all covid protocols in use. During our appointment Irena was very professional, knowledgeable, polite and fast. We were in and out in no time with everything done like I was explained over the phone. My sons passport was done in 3 weeks which I find extra fast with all the covid restrictions here and in Croatia. It's always pleasure to work with our Consulate in New York. Thank you for making our life abroad so...
