I had hoped my experience at the Egyptian Consulate would be seemless based on recent google reviews. Unfortunately that was not the case. The consulate is located in a newish looking office near the UN and its easy enough to find. Once you check in with security at the entrance of the building housing the consulate and make your way to the office, you are made to sign in and surrender your phone. There is a machine that gives you a token based on your business at the consulate and then you wait in the waiting area which is a decent size. Seems straightforward enough right? If only it was.
They say they open at 9am, so I get there at 10 minutes past 9, get a token and wait. I was there for a visa application as was an elderly couple who came in a couple of minutes after me. There are 4 windows where they call your token number of which only 2 were manned. 9 am becomes 9:30, 9:30 becomes 10. Employees are either waltzing in late or wandering around aimlessly and no one is getting helped. People, understandly are getting agitated and asking questions, although the conversations were in arabic and I don't know what was being said. It seemed as if whoever lost patience and began complaining was being tended to first as a lot of people who came in after me got called ahead of me. Finally after an hour and 15 minutes of waiting, when I had almost given up, the lady at one of the windows looked at me and said visa? So I just ran up to the window before she changed her mind. My actual work there took all of 2 minutes.
2 weeks later I went to pick up my passport and when through the same sign in procedure. Handed over my phone, was given a token and was asked to head over to the waiting area again. I was prepared for another inordinate and excruciating wait. Lucky there was a different gentleman at the sign up desk this time who double checked the purpose of my visit. Since I only had to pick up my passport he told me much to my delight that I wouldn't have to wait. The 2 stars I'm giving this place are exclusively for him. The rest of the operation is shabby, disorganized and unbecoming of an international consulate.
P.S. I still had to wait another 15 minutes before I actually got my...
Read moreI went to the consulate to get some documents Taken care of. The staff was very courteous and professional. After i was done , i asked to speak or make an appointment with the consular and i expressed that it is a delicate, private matter. After few minutes he came out to the window and loudly and rudely like i was in a marketplace or a bar saying yes. So i approached the window and ask about his identity. He affirmed that he is the one in charge , he didn't even introduce himself or his name or position. I found out his name from the staff. His name is Wael according to the staff. So when he came to the window, i looked at him suprised by his lack of mannerism and professionalism. He said to me through the window in front of everbody quote" are you going to tell me what is going on or should i go back to work " i was in a shock that all i could say was go back to work. This guy should NOT be in that sensitive position . This is a disgrace to the egyptian embassy in the united stated of America. This is really a very bad and shameful image of people who are suppose to help and represent a country and its citizens. I will not back go and i want to know who can i speak to that is truly in charge and know how to deal with citizens. This guy doesn't belong to that seat. No manners, no class in communication, no people skills, no dignitary skills. Truly a shame. Egypt should really replace him. This guy forgot that he was talking to an American . I get better service from a street vendor. And if i ever go to Egypt as an AMERICAN citizen i will report him to the proper channels and to the...
Read moreIf you’re an Egyptian looking for help from the Egyptian Consulate in NYC, prepare to be disrespected, ignored, and treated like an inconvenience. This place is not here to serve Egyptians—it’s here to make your life harder while acting like they’re doing you a favor.
I applied for a simple Power of Attorney stamp. Sent all the required documents, followed every step, and paid $100 in fees and money orders. After waiting an entire month, I got a vague, one-line response saying my application was rejected. No reason, no explanation—just flat-out rejected.
When I called to ask why, the woman on the phone refused to give me an answer. I asked to speak to the person who made the decision—she wouldn’t let me. I asked her to check with the consul—she hung up on me. No professionalism, no respect, just pure rudeness. When I called back? No one picked up.
This isn’t just incompetence—it’s deliberate disregard for the people they’re supposed to help. The Egyptian consul and his staff treat Egyptians like second-class citizens, as if we’re begging them for favors rather than exercising our basic rights. They take our money, waste our time, and then act like we don’t exist.
To the consul and your staff: you know exactly what you did. You have my information. You didn’t even try to do your job. You are supposed to be public servants, but you act like untouchable bureaucrats who think they’re above accountability.
If you’re an Egyptian in the U.S., avoid this place unless you’re prepared for frustration and humiliation. The Egyptian Consulate in NYC is a shameful, corrupt, and utterly...
