Been here a couple of times. For their grand opening... For their waxing workshops... For general purchasing needs... Etc. Overall, this flagship store is everything you'd imagine the store to look and feel. It's even better in person. Rugged, outdoorsy, modern, and useful. The sales people are nice. They don't push you to buy anything and if open to help you with anything from how to wax, how to send back a product for repair, and general products. Most people who come in are loyal filson enthusiast of the community. They wear filson for years and you can tell. The other people are those who wear it for fashion which is fine too. There's a sales twice a year and usually the discounts are about 50% off. However, the things I like that are limited edition are usually not there in the sales. In my opinion, the most "worth it" products are their Mackinaw wool and bags with bridle leather which I can attest to last year's. I have had one of my zippered totes since 2011 and it still looks great. The other items are just not worth it for the prices like a Uber small coin purse that didn't have a handle keychain for $75 and it was smaller than the palm of my hand. But... Overall great store to peruse and maybe get something that can last you for...
Read moreI do what I can to visit the Filson store in NYC when I am in town. Having moved from the city to AK, Filson has become one of my top go-to companies.
I have been in the market for a hatchet, and thought I would check it out at the store. Al gave me the run-down on the axe, tips for maintenence and good advice for someone just getting their feet wet in this area. After that and an excellent whiskey, talked about knives, hiking, and local areas of interest. It was the perfect shopping experience. Additionally, Al made a spot-on recommended for the best burger and onion rings I have had in NYC - see my other recommendations.
Double Mackinaw Special edition, Mackinaw Jacket Special edition, wool socks, belt, tin cloth wallet, twill luggage - napsack - briefcase, home lounge clothes, wool blankets, log carrier, scotch glasses, a variety of iron work, and a variety of shirts ... I have never been disappointed.
Sizes can be generous - these clothes are made for doing, not just for being. Returns take time- esp. in AK, but the quality and the service...
Read moreDuring my one week New York trip, my fellow traveller guided me to Filson. Here you meet the nicest and competent people. As Filson provides clothing for outdoor working folks for more than 100 years for peolpe who need high quality under harsh conditions (e.g. park rangers), you find highest quality products here. But it's not all outdoor clothing for the woods... which alone would not make sense to have a store in the Center of Manhatten. If you like something different, functional and stylish or only something for the city that will endure longer than most other garments you get around, you go to Filson. My friend needed to get some pants for a friend in Germany. I was intrigued by the store (went there three times), the products, the people. I learned instressting things about the history of Filson. One of the nice man of Filson spoke best german and recommended one of his favorite German places in Queens ("Zum Stammtisch"). All in all it was a great experience and I went home to Germany with a great new jacket. See you next time when I come...
