The people who work here are the rudest people, if a business promotes its business hours as 10-8pm and they don’t announce ANYWHERE on their website, social media channels or phone VM that they’re closing early…nor answer their phones when customers are calling to confirm the hours before commuting in the rain, then the business has an obligation to provide its services BEFORE they are “closed”. What did this business do instead? Let more then 10 customers stand outside in the rain, rolled their eyes at us, called us liars because “they didn’t get a call” and threatened to call the cops. All fluff bc if they couldn’t even stay until 8pm (the time of their business hours) to do their work, what makes me think they would’ve stayed past 8pm to wait for the cops. It was only an intimidation tactic. All I and 10 other people wanted to do as we stood out on the rain was to support this business and shop on a SATURDAY NIGHT BEFORE IT CLOSED AT 8PM. Instead, we were encountered by outright laziness, and most awful service. I would never try going here again, false advertisers and horrible people that work here who...
Read moreThe coolest shop in NYC, period.
Owner Julie and awesome artist son Ben are brilliant, kind, funny people who help make NYC so wonderfully unique. (No wonder Amy Sedaris is their friend!)
It’s magical just passing by but a revelation walking in.. the atmosphere is unlike anything else in the city, warm and welcoming, fun vibe, cool music, with the historic space itself being half the experience (old school high ceilings and fixtures, with worn, wise old wood floors). The stock is a wide variety of affordable, amusing, vintage and new, witty, well made and practical goods.. (ideal for gift giving)
Owners are subtle but not shy about standing up for what’s right too. If you know, you know.
Btw, check out their book how Julie and hubby David started the shop decades ago. A true a labor of love, and perfect old school NYC business success story.
Be prepared to spend at least 15 mins looking around, there’s so much to look at.. take advantage of the bench in back for parking a tired...
Read moreThere are not many things, in my opinion, better than a nice set of crockery and some good cutlery and tea towels and other assorted things for your home.
It is fortunate that i stumbled upon Fishs Eddy. This small store has almost everything you’ll need for dining. Plus a lot of things you wouldn’t expect. Like a pet portrait department.
The staff are great, very friendly and helpful and enthusiastic. On my (first) visit i picked up some nice napkin rings, a couple of Tea Towels (dish towels) and a few small glasses. I happened on a delightful looking book called “Minding the Store by Fishs Eddy founder Julie Gaines.
The book is truly wonderful, giving us an insight into how the store and its memorable name, came to be.
Fishs Eddy is a perfect example of a fantastic little store, full of wonderful unique items and a fun, lively interior and exterior and lovely staff to boot. Check it out, you...
