I booked some training sessions with Focus for my trip to NYC. I wanted to burn off a few calories while we enjoyed our food escapade in the city. Here is the letter I wrote to customer service. I was blown away by the service:
I wanted to write to you to let you know how impressed I was by the service I received at Focus. My husband tells me that I can be difficult when it comes to service and in my expectations, but I want you to know that overall, your facility surpassed my expectations.
I appreciate that you were very patient and friendly on the phone. Thank you for even offering to give us ideas on where to eat and what to do. (We tried Becco, by the way, and it was an excellent choice. Thank you). I also appreciate that you followed up so quickly and that you sent me the info for the trainer so I could also contact him. Thank you also for helping me with directions on how to get to the fitness facility.
I got to the gym at 7:30am where my appointment was 8am. Nick Law-Yue was already there and waiting and i was impressed. I am always punctual and tardiness is a huge pet peeve of mine. Nick was also there the next morning when I arrived at 8:30am and our appointment was 9am. He was very professional and motivating. He pushed me to my limits. He asked me to rate the intensity of the workout so he could decide whether to increase it or decrease it. The workout was intense and ever changing so I did not get bored. I absolutely loved it. The only thing upsetting was my stomach....I shouldn't have pizza the night before a Focus workout. I liked that he stretched me after the workout and that it was an intense, well balanced full body workout with cardio and weights and that he incorporated tabata since I said I liked that.
NYC is only 1 hour 5 min flight from us here in Holland, Ohio. I will definitely use your facility again on our next food escapade to the city.

   Read moreI had been eyeing Focusâ Starting Strength Barbell class for literally a year before joining in January 2018. I had always been in interested in training somewhere, and often came across Focusâ name whenever I googled âbest place to train in NYCâ. I have a particular love for the place as it is a facility and program that trains trainers, so you know what youâre getting is top of the line.
Finally, I took the plunge and signed up. 100% worth it. I have learned more about form on the Squat, Bench, Deadlift, Overhead Press, Barbell Row, Chin-ups than I ever could have imagined. Iâll often find myself babbling in workout lingo well after the clas is over. Iâve even helped âtrain a few friendsâ (one of whom joined the class briefly) aka give them some pointers.
Even better than learning the technical aspects of form, you actually practice, constantly, under the bar. Every day you are there you are concretely working and being coached to be better. Iâve broken through countless mental and physical barriers and have never felt better. (At a mere 150lbs, I have lifted 260+ lbs on my deadlift... for reference, when I started I could barely lift 115 lbs! All over the span of a few months.)
Finally, and by far the best and most important element of training at Focus - the people. Coaches, interns, fellow lifters; everyone is wonderful. There is tons of individualized attention from the Focus team, and a consistently friendly, driven community to lift beside. I am an actor and one fellow lifter even came and saw a show of mine when it was on at Lincoln Center. What more can you ask for?
Up until a few work trips in June, I had not once missed a (3x/week, twice at 7AM) class, despite the early start and distance from my home. It has been that great.

   Read moreFor the past 4 months I've been participating in one of the FOCUS Integrated Fitness exercise and nutrition programs. With the knowledge and support of my Personal Trainer, Nick Law-Yu and Nutrition coach, Ryan Heffernan, I've already achieved significant progress, with an increase in strength and a decrease in my overall Body Mass Index.
Up until joining FOCUS, I've always trained on my own without the skill and motivation of an experienced personal trainer. Based on my own personal fitness goals, Nick designed a program involving a combination of weight training and cross fitness routines, so my sessions are never repetitive and always a challenge.
Along with Nick, I've also been working with Nutrition Coach Ryan Heffernan. With his professional exsperience and the use of the Precision Nutrition System, Ryan has guided me on the path to a healthy, nutritional lifestyle, a key component to reaching your fitness goals. Precision Nutrition entails eating simple unprocessed foods, more often and in portions based on your size, body type and ultimate goal. The system never feels like a diet, so I never feel deprived or unsatisfied and the results speak for themselves. Before using Precision, I would have never considered my diet to be unhealthy, but I soon realized there's always room for improvement.
My overall experience at Focus has been extremely positive. In addition to Nick and Ryan, the rest of the FOCUS staff are equally professional and personable. The facility is clean, bright and conveniently located in the heart of Chelsea, plus there's always an abundance of positive energy amongst staff and other members. The combination of proper nutrition and working with a trainer, have given me the knowledge and drive to reach my fitness goals and the ability to maintain them into the future.
