As of Grand Central Terminal needed to get any better — the addition of the LIRR definitely adds something more than just transportation. I had a great time just checking out the permanent art installations of Kiki Smith and Yayoi Kusama.
On the Madison Concourse level, starting at approximately 44th street you will see River Light, the first of Kiki Smith’s five gorgeous mosaics and Yayoi Kusama’s whimsical mosaic, A Message of Love, Directly from My Heart unto the Universe” also on this level are the International Center of Photography’s photo light-box exhibits and a digital art wall that is worth taking a seat on the floor to watch.
Then head down to the Mezzanine level on one of the grand escalators — the longest in the city I believe — to see Kiki Smiths other 4 mosaics — The Presence; The Spring; The Sound; The Water's Way — which are located at 45th, 46th, 47th and 48th access points to the LIRR tracks.
If you have time the passageways of Grand Central Terminal and the terminal itself have a few amazing art works worth checking out. I hope to post...
Read moreThe new AWESOME LIRR in Grand Central Station (GCS) in NYC!!! On the west/Vanderbilt St side of GCS, take the escalator below the Main Concourse to the Madison Concourse. Go through blue-green doors and turn right. The concourse is newly built, spacious, CLEAN, no stinky smell, with three NYPD posts & several cops, CLEAN restrooms with paper pads for toilets seats, shops, food, drinks. The LIRR Ticketing and Customer Service is at this level (3rd down from the Main Concourse). Take the deep escalator (seems to be 6-7 floors high) down (one each at 45th, 46th, 47th Sts). There are elevators between the 46th & 47th exits. Look for your track on the monitor which is accessible through another escalator down or up. Once in the platform for track 302, the first car is the tail of the train. I describe this so those with motion sickness could choose a seat facing the front. There is internet connectivity four levels beneath street level.
Let’s hope LIRR and us, rail riders, maintain this wonder in NYC, especially...

There is a newly built railroad station beneath Grand Central Terminal.
You will be amazed at the beautiful works of art and other amenities in this extension of the GCT.
The walls are decorated with murals, digital wall art, and word art.
The escalator is 17 stories below the GCT and it takes 1 minute 39 seconds to travel.
There aren’t full service restaurants, but multiple food kiosks are stationed in case you need a quick on-the-go snack.
Even if you don’t have a train to catch, stop by this terminal for an afternoon of sightseeing and entertainment!
