I came in for a haircut and wash close to the salon’s closing time, so I first asked if they were still open and offering haircuts and they immediately agreed, which I appreciated.
However, the overall experience was disappointing. I showed the stylist a video of the haircut I wanted (long layers), but she only glanced at it for a couple of seconds and didn’t ask any clarifying questions other than how long I wanted to keep my hair. She then started the haircut. After realizing I hadn’t mentioned the wash, I brought it up early on and she said it was fine. Another staff member did the wash, which felt rushed and was followed by a coarse, itchy towel around my neck.
I was then left waiting for nearly 50 minutes, with the stylist occasionally checking in while she worked on other customers. When she finally began cutting, she didn’t ask again about the style I wanted or confirm the details. The result looked nothing like what I showed her: the layers were choppy, unblended, and almost half of my hair was short and choppy without the layers I asked for. My hair now looks short other than the little bit of long hair left, similar to a jellyfish haircut, which wasn’t the look in the reference.
I understand I came in near closing, and I tried to be patient, but I still expected a basic level of communication, care, and execution. I hadn't been expecting much because of the low price, but I had expected a reasonably presentable haircut. I’m really disappointed with the final result, and I wouldn’t recommend this place for layered cuts, nor will I be returning.

Read more5-star hair cut, every single time for an amazing steal of a price. I've lived in 7 different cities before and I've never had someone cut my hair better than these guys. I've gone to Kelly Hair Salon for about 3 years now - I just absolutely love how they take their time to wash your hair, give you a scalp massage and carefully blow dry each section of your hair. Oh, and hot towels! Makes me feel taken care of and my hair always looks AMAZING after Jadesy is done working her magic. Brought my skeptical husband here as well and he too was impressed and became a converted fan quickly! He's never going anywhere else now.
Sure, it may look a bit bare bones on the outside and inside and they mostly speak Cantonese with a smattering of English, but as long as you show a photo of what you want your hair to look like, they always, always deliver at such great value.
Plus, they are open from 9am to 7 pm everyday except Thursday, which I appreciate, since I work late sometimes.
My favorite hair salon in New York City ever! What would I do without Kelly...
Read moreThe more popular salon across the road on Pell st. was full and busy, so I took I chance on this one. I was skeptical because the place looks shabby and i thought it was just a barbershop then I saw female staff on the ither side. I got a very relaxing hair wash,,, the lady was vigorously washing my scalp that for some, it may feel like she’s rough but it felt like a head massage for me. MANDY did my hair. I was pleasantly surprised with the result. My hair easily beat the 120 haircut I got from midtown. I will definitely comeback here when I visit Chinatown again. I am not sure if they allow you to choose a hairdresser but I recommend making allowance so you can just come back when Mandy is available. I paid 22 dollars plus tip.
As for telling her they hairstyle, I just told her short layers, short at the back and long...
