I'm not one to normally write reviews for any place at all but thought I should share my experience with this salon. I bought a gilt coupon for a balayage at Matii after reading all the 5 star reviews and of course had high expectations. I was given a junior colorist (or at least the most junior in the salon) understandably because I bought a gilt. I showed him photos of potential balayage colors I was contemplating, and he confidently said that he knows what to do and showed me his trophy indirectly letting me know he knew what he was doing. After several hours and seeing the results, I instantly knew that the color was not what I had in mind or nearly close to the pictures I had shown. I asked if the roots of my hair should be dyed so that it does not look like I haven't gotten a touch up in 6 months - he told me that it's not balayage if I get my roots touched up (another salon would tell you differently). Perhaps it was miscommunication, but my hair color turned out to be so light (and like I haven't done a touch-up in 6months) and super dry - he said it was normal because of the bleach. I left the salon uneasy, and thought I should give it a few days because "I was not used to seeing my hair that way"

I went back several days after to get it fixed because the color turned out to be more 'brassy' and faded as I washed, but the guy that helped was so sarcastic as he helped me. I felt so disappointed with the service and his sarcastic comments to me during the wash and treatment. He was so rough with my hair as well. I believe Bernard, the owner, had realised this and came over to help. He was really helpful and made me feel better about going back to get it fixed.

So, they 'toned' down my hair colour, now it just looks like I didn't do anything to my hair, so it really was a waste of my money completely. Now, I'm looking for another salon to get...

I went last week to color my hair, do some highlights. I have long blond hair and they were in a good condition, I really take care of my hair. It wasn’t my first time in this salon. My stylist Bernard did a great job with the nightlights. But then when I was getting hair treatment it all went wrong. My stylist was busy with another customer and my treatment did a new employee, who obviously did that for the first time. ( I know because I’ve heard their conversation) Another stylist was helping him. I thought I had nothing to worry about. Long story short- after they have finished rubbing conditioner-treatment into my hair, my hair is were extremely tangled. I was speechless. I didn’t make a big deal out it just because I was in shock. It looked so bad I thought I will lose all my hair. I was sitting with wet and cold hair for almost 1,5 hours while they were trying to untangle my hair. I could see in a mirror how much hair they broke and pulled. They didn’t charge me for the treatment. But what I realized later- nobody really apologized for what happened. My stylist said it’s not his fault. Made jokes. The other stylist who participated in doing this hair treatment didn’t even say anything to me. They blamed my hair! And they blamed the treatment, that its not for my hair. But who’s fault was it? how can you let a unqualified person to your client? They ruined my hair, years of growing long and blond hair. My husband called next day and asked to return the money for the whole service, they eventually agreed. But the craziest thing they said that they don’t wanna see me again. I would never come back myself, but how can they say that they don’t wanna see me? After what they did to me? I’m not even taking of a terrible customer service but on a human scale how can someone...

GREAT stylists, TERRIBLE Customer Service. Groupon users beware:

I visited this salon in Jan of 2023 for highlights, cut and blow dry with a Groupon voucher for all of the above. I LOVED the results and in Jan of this year (2024) purchased another Groupon for a different service. I read the fine print (which states repeat clients may not use the Groupon twice in a year) and called to book my appointment with no issue.

On the day of my appointment I was refused service because they would not accept a Groupon twice. I explained that if that were the case I should NOT have been able to purchase the Groupon again. (I used the same email account so it wasn’t as if I was cheating them). I was offered service at the Groupon price, which I am grateful for, but explained that it would not work for me, as that money was already lost in the Groupon and if you’ve used Groupon you know their refunds go back into Groupon itself, not into the original payment.

I showed them the fine print and did my best to explain all of the above and was told “we have the right to refuse service.” To me it feels like they look down on those that use Groupons. If you only want a customer to use the Groupon ONCE, it should say so and they should not be able to purchase it a maximum of TWO times.

The stylist I had in 2023 was GREAT. I unfortunately don’t remember her name.

This is in no way against the stylists, but the two men in glasses that had to work together to tell me “we don’t want...

I read all the reviews before picking Matii Hair salon. I will say most reviews were good, and seem to be from locals - that might be the key with this place. This is not my 1st time in NY, been coming since I was 7. Bernhard was the worse, chicest con person I have met!!! BEWARE OUTSIDERS . I paid $156 for something that looked like a messy birds nest in the back of my hair ( for a rehearsal wedding dinner) . I was charged for a "Blow Dry" but et my hair was fully dry, he didn't even wash it. I also got charged another $25 for him having to use a product in my hair that he didn't have open already. But that was done with no warning or even a conversation before applying to my hair, had not clue that I was going to be charged ( I would never use this product on my own). I arrived back in my hotel sobbing because of how bad i felt i looked, esp for paying what I paid. I wouldnt have minded paying for the extras and the high price, if I felt like i left looking like what i paid for.

I absolutely loved the service here. I have been going to multiple different salons and have always been a customer who was not pleased with the service because they could never get the color I wanted. Doris saw a couple photos I showed, and knew exactly what to do and her results delivered exceptionally!! I also came in with dry, orange/brassy hair and she knew exactly how to fix it. She was fast with everything but not rushed and always checked up on me. The price was a bit higher than what I usually paid before but to be honest, for the service and results, i don’t mind as much. I will definitely be coming back here
