I occasionally make reviews where I have had a disappointing experience, sometimes based on behavior encountered. This place is put forward as an old world, friendly neighborhood saloon. I ordered a scotch sour, which came in what seemed an unusually small glass, where not one more ice chip could have been fit into it, with what seemed a bit of scotch added to sour mix. I noted this to the waiter saying it was the 'shortest pour' I had ever seen. He agreed with my assessment and offered to take it back--I requested the drink "up" rather than on ice. He returned with a drink that looked identical, and could have been the same drink--certainly not a better drink and not without ice. The server was again apologetic but nothing changed. Drinking it felt like just getting a few sips of mostly mix from between the ice cubes. The food was good. The server was nice. But nothing was offered, nothing was done and nothing was deducted from the bill's $15 cost of the drink. I paid the bill after very politely noting disappointment and left a good tip but will not return to a place that holds itself out as a drinking establishment where I politely indicated a problem, was told that I was right, but nothing was done other than take almost $50 from me for the experience. Too many good places for me to frequent to go back to a place with that sort of...
Read moreFirst of all, I will start by saying this IS a nice place, decor wise. Note, there isn't an happy hour at this bar, btw. The online and in house menu is different from the actual cost. I would suggest anyone going here check with the bartender to get accurate prices for their whiskey. It gets busy pretty quickly.
Now to why I gave this a one star....the treatment by the bartender and the owner himself was just condescending and rude. As a paying customer, I have every right to ask why the prices on my bill does not reflect the menu given to me or the one online. To pat us on the back, open up your wallet and throw a bill on the table, tell us you are too busy to go online and it costs too much to get new menus....really? I guess we were gnats that you wanted to get rid of, or you thought we were out of place in your bar. Either way this was beyond rude and unnecessary. We literally came there to try a certain whiskey you carried, we didn't need the...
Read moreExcellent food and service, cozy old school setting - what's there not to love? Used to work midtown years ago and was a patron/fan of PJ Clarke's and Doug Quinn in particular. Arranged a business lunch here as I've wanted to come in and say hello, and have a meal. Everything was fantastic! Attentive server, made some great menu suggestions. Quick service with drinks. Everything was cooked to perfection. I ordered the sliced beef au jus sandwich. Juicy and tender. Came with a side of some sort or bourbon/cream au jus.. I ordered extra to dip with my fries. Really amazing. My client ordered a burger, also perfect. The food is pub style but executed in a more elegant way. I loved the old school decor, and nice classic jazz playing in background. - Doug hit the nail on the head - it really is an old school style NY joint. I don't get to midtown much, but this will...
