I stayed at the San Carlos Hotel over a 7 week period for a business trip to NYC, and I feel it's only fair to give it 5 stars (even if I do have some minor complaints I will detail at the bottom of this review) because my overall experience was so overwhelmingly positive that it'd be ridiculous not to rate it highly.
Many things set the San Carlos apart from literally every other mid-tier priced hotel in Manhattan, and these are the standouts: They have incredibly, INCREDIBLY friendly staff, with basically every single interaction with each and every one of them being pleasant. They consistently went above and beyond for me from even before I got there, and were always available to do their best to assist me with whatever I needed. The rooms are spacious AND clean. Housekeeping was thorough each and every time. The sheets/towels were always fresh, the room didn't smell weird, I didn't see a single bug the entire time I was there, and overall I'd say the rooms were more or less quiet. Obviously not much can be done to block out the sound of blaring sirens, but I rarely heard anyone in another room unless they were full on yelling. The bathroom was also spacious and basically pristine, with my bathroom amenities being regularly refreshed. The internet is probably some of the best/most reliable you will find in NYC. I play video games at a highly competitive level and didn't have a single issue the entire time I was there, which is something I specifically chose the San Carlos for. The location is really freakin' good, only about a block from the 6 line and 2 blocks from a couple others. There is also a lot within walking distance to do/see/eat and it's all in a nice part of town.
All in all, I would absolutely stay here again next time I am in NYC for business, and I'm sure it's a great hotel for families as well.
As for my complaints, some of these things might be dealbreakers for anyone reading this, for me they weren't, but I still feel obligated to mention them for the sake of transparency: There is no breakfast served at this hotel, and not even so much as a water fountain to fill up a bottle. I ended up buying quite a lot of bottled water during my stay. I was regularly shocked by the elevator call buttons if I didn't press squarely on the button, and additionally was regularly minority shocked by my electronic keycard door (which I was given a metal key to because of the length of my stay, so this might not apply to most visitors.) There IS a "hidden" resort fee (meaning, it won't show up on most booking websites nor will it be included in the nightly rate online typically). I was very grateful to have had my resort fee waived due to the length of my stay. This fee is almost universal to any hotel in Manhattan. They outsource laundry and parking, neither of which I ended up using, but might have used the former if it were within the hotel. I found the bed to be a bit stiff for my taste.
TL;DR - This is a great hotel and they can count on me returning next time...
Read moreMy wife and I are staying in NY before we go on our cruise from Manhattan. We needed a centralised hotel but without paying the $1000 dollar per night price tag that is very easily reached here. We finally chose the San Carlos hotel Which was $450 a night.|Now we can afford this but we usually would pay perhaps only half this rate in the UK. So how does this price fit?| |The San Carlos is classed as a 4* hotel and is situated right in the heart of Manhattan on 150/50th close to Lexington Ave just round the corner from the Waldorf Hotel. It does not have a gym, or a restaurant, or a roof top bar. But who needs them when breakfast can be had across the road at a very reasonable price or dinner next door at one of the best Chinese/ Indian restaurants in New York. In this part of town there are bars a plenty so the any perceived loss, is very easily mitigated.||The reception is excellent and efficient and makes you very welcome. All the staff including doorman are well versed in looking after you and make you feel that you are staying in a special hotel in a special place. Questions on how to get around NY and where to go, are answered expertly. We have never used the underground in NY, but with the help of the Concierge at the hotel we felt comfortable to try it and it worked well for us.|The rooms are large and airy clean and have all the amenities that you expect from a 4* hotel. We had all that we needed for our short stay, but I am confident that if we did need something then the hotel would endeavour to provide it. The beds are firm and comfortable but too large for us making you feel like a pea on a drum lost for the arms of a partner. The internet is excellent with easy access.||My only criticism is that the room only has on easy chair and tiny side table. I would have expected easy chairs and there is room for another. However, it’s a three day stay, and I am confident if I asked the hotel for another chair then they would oblige.||There is no view from our room window, but it was not required on our stay. So if it’s a central hotel at mid price in New York that you seek and you are happy enough to find food and recreation outside of the hotel, then this is the place. It’s an upmarket experience for the choosy, with an average deep pocket.||Within two min you are the Subway (...
Read moreOur family of 6 loved everything about the San Carlos Hotel! We had never stayed here or even noticed it when we lived in NYC years ago but the price and location caught my attention so I took a chance and booked a week and a half stay. The location was perfect for getting around Manhattan and was near the majority of our desired locations. The staff was incredible! From check in to check out we had superior service and interaction over our 10 day stay. The rooms were huge! My husband and I had a king 1 bedroom suite with an extra powder room and our kids had a double queen 1 bedroom suite. Our rooms were clean and attended to each day. The beds were comfortable and there was a large pillow selection. It was nice to have a kitchenette in our room too. Our kids loved the vending machines and sitting area on the 2nd floor and were regularly entertained by the doorman and staff as we all congregated in the lobby. Every type of restaurant you can imagine is within 5 blocks of the hotel. We used the subway, buses, car service and taxis to get around. The entire team at the hotel became family over our extended stay. They went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our trip and got everything accomplished that we needed to. They even had complimentary umbrellas to use on rainy days. If you are questioning weather or not to book at this location, I promise you won't be disappointed. We plan to make many more trips to NYC and call the San Carlos Hotel our home...
