Read moreI did attend the Friday night âLive at the Innâ extravaganza, a spectacle in the purest sense of the word. I was, inevitably, put in mind of the variety show heights of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, to use a reference both obscure and outdated. We guffawed, we joined in chorus, some of us even broke into spontaneous tears (if I may speculate).
The salmagundi of percussion instruments on display in the basement allowed for the creation of a joyful noise; the sort of ruckus that confuses the blind and wakes the dead. Audience participation was encouraged, and I felt compelled to loiter around after the show, testing out the lithophones and gongs. I was like a portly Belgian youth set free in a chocolate shop, brandishing my weekly quarter from Mutter.
I was helped by a gentleman named Coolie (spelling?) who gave me a brief tour of the establishment, and who stamped my hand with the gentlest of touches. I suspect he may have been a surgeon in a past life.
I plan on returning to The Music Inn before 2024 gives up the ghost, and would encourage all who stalk the streets of Greenwich, be they tourist or local, to give the august institution their patronage. Follow in the footsteps of Robert âBob Dylanâ Zimmerman, and live as he did (barring the divorces, although perhaps that appeals to you. I most likely...
Read moreThis was a highlight of my trip to New York. I went with my daughter and her girlfriend and it felt like a step back in time. You go downstairs into a tiny basement that seats Iâm guessing maybe 24 people and you sit on cheap folding chairs and you are mere feet away from the performers. You can BYOB and there is a bodega next door. People would excuse themselves to reload mid show. The show itself is great! Be prepared to interact and talk about yourself. Nothing overly personal, but you end up learning something about every audience member. I was âSeattle guyâ because (spoiler) Iâm from Seattle. There was a couple on their 2nd date, a group from Australia, 3 girlfriends out together, etc. It was fun and no one was mean or rude. Be prepared for coarse language. one song had a rap about an intimate part of the female anatomy that rhymes with clitoris. The show lasted two hours and featured music and comedy. The musicians were great and the comedians may well show up on SNL in a year or two. For the price itâs the best entertainment...
