I started going to one of the stylists, Kazu, when he was still at Bijin, then he and several of the top stylists from Bijin opened Kinya. The location is easy, and although there isn't a banner outside, I like it as it feels a little more intimate and only people in the know goes. Inside is light, chic, simple and modern. From the receptionist to the shampoo-ists and assistants, to the stylists themselves, it is an all Japanese crew and they are all so efficient, kind and courteous, makes you feel special with the air that you're about to be treated. If you've never had a shampoo by a Japanese, you're in for a treat -- they really get in there and massage your head, get all the points, and you come out of it feeling like you've just been to the spa. I've not tried any of the other stylists, but I can say that Kazu is simplest the best and the only person I can trust to cut and color. I'm half Japanese so I have fine but plentiful hair and it's a subtle dark brown/almost black that, if colored wrong, will be either too black and harsh, or too brown and ugly. He just NAILS it with the color! I'm not terribly adventurous with my cuts as I like to keep it long, but recently started going for the layers in the front to give it a little more texture, and Kazu is great at matching the image you have in your mind and translating it into a cut that fits your face and overall image, that is tasteful and fashionable. I think the prices are fair -- it could be much more expensive in other Manhattan salons for the level and quality of service they give you. This is the only place I'll go now...
Read moreIf you are Japanese or looking for a Japanese stylist who is trained in Japan, I don't recommend here. I am the one and I told the receptionist I want a Japanese stylist. The stylist was Japanese American who wasn't trained in Japan. I didn't care until I saw the final result. I have been always gone to Japanese salons and never experienced this anywhere in NY. The owner should know it's a big disappointment for Japanese clients who choose to go to Japanese hair salons because they are looking for the Japanese cutting technique, and spend nearly $100 to get a haircut that's really far from the expectation. She nicely fixed again and worked hard, I really liked her but the owner should be more aware of the situation and trained receptionists and stylists, if they care for Japanese clients. I feel sorry for my haircut and the stylist who has to do something she...
Read moreIf you want to look and feel amazing, come here. My hair and I have a rocky relationship but this salon has given me a breath of fresh air. I've tried a fair share of salons in nyc but none of them amount to salon kinya. Beautiful, clean, well maintained establishment with kind people. Definitely worth the price. My stylist listened very intently to what I wanted, was extremely precise and thoughtful. I immediately felt comfortable and relaxed. For as long as I live in nyc, I'll be coming back to salon kinya. If I could rate this a 10...
