UPDATE: Was in there this past weekend, and it appears as though the jazz has been alphabetized. I've bumped them up from three stars to four.
...definitely worth stopping by. I was a fan of Good Records (the store's former name/ownership), and was concerned when the Superior Viaduct/Stranded folks took over, but so far it's been pretty solid: Interesting new stock, well-curated used stuff, and a fairly chill atmosphere. It's nice to have a place where you KNOW that Super Viaduct/ASH product will be available, as sometimes it takes other indie shops ages to get it in.
That said, some problems from the Good era persist: Prices are on the high side, even for New York City, so do your homework before plunking down for big ticket items. The layout and organization of the store is a bit tricky, with some good stock down under the main bins -- you'll walk right by it if you don't pay attention!
Lastly, Stranded has some really great Jazz...but for some reason (and I've seen others mention this), the jazz section isn't alphabetized. It's just all tossed into the bins. I guess this gives employees one less thing to do, but for regular customers trying to find specific titles/artists,...
ย ย ย Read moreThis store has a great selection of new records, generally a good selection of used records which range in price from totally fair to totally outrageous, and if i was bagging my rating on the stock alone I'd give 3-4 stars (4 if it wasn't for the way overpriced records), but instead I'm giving one start because the staff is consistently rude, sometimes aggressively so, unhelpful, and act like they don't want to deal with customers at all. It is absolutely the rudest, unfriendliest record store I've been to in the city, and at this point I don't really want to give them my money - I'll pay a few dollars more to get stuff on Discogs if i can't find it at a different store rather than shop at...
ย ย ย Read moreI normally visit this store every time Im in New York. They always have a quality selection of different genres in stock. The owner is really knowledgeable and nice. Last time, Benjamin from Cherry Records was working behind the counter and we had a great chat about samples on jazz records. This time however was really disappointing as there were two young kids working who where completely stand offish and rude. They completely ignored me while i waited to pay, talking amongst themselves, and could barely look up from their phone as they handed me the records. If i wanted to be dismissed by a store clerk half my age i'd go and...
