I came for inquiry for cat adoption - met by the most unpleasant rude woman you can imagine. As I spoke and asked the questions, she brushed me off that she doesn’t have time because she has to clean. Each word I spoke was just treated as a sheer nuisance and I was just shocked for her anger at obvious stranger that she met for the first time. When I asked her to see the cats, she said it’s not to enter and angrily yelled at us “this is sanctuary and injured animal live here!!!” I got offended and decided to sit and eat pizza I brought in front of the sanctuary. Surprise surprise! The same woman yelled at us and repelled us kindly welcomed two younger white guys and even let them approach near the gate. Is she a racist or what? As they ask similar questions like I did, she passionately answered and was even cracking smiles. Meanwhile she monitored us and looked every occasion to yell at us even outside the sanctuary - when my daughter found a little kitten outside the sanctuary fence and tried to approach, she yelled from the sanctuary at her. As I ask “is she retuning there?” She was angrily mumbling something. Extremely unpleasant experience. Forget about cat rescue. This woman needs to rescue herself.

I have lived on the island for 10 years and have volunteered with the Wildlife Freedom Foundation (WFF) for almost as much time. I have had the pleasure of helping WFF rehabilitate and care for countless animals including geese, opossums, squirrels, ducks, swans, and of course cats! The sanctuaries can be found around Roosevelt Island and have greatly improved the lives of residents and and wildlife. WFF works with the ACC of NYC, the kill shelter of the city, to take in formerly owned and rescued cats and save them from being put down. WFF not only acts as a custodian of these cats but does so much more work with the wildlife of the island. The Southpoint Park Sanctuary serves as a home for a variety of animals (cats, geese, ducks, opossums, swans, squirrels) that are year long residents of the island and find refuge at the sanctuary. I encourage visitors to stop by the sanctuaries to learn more about the wildlife of Roosevelt Island and the work of WFF and its dedication to all animals

I appreciate what they do for birds but I do doubt the idea with cats. If cats were considered wildlife, why are they fed on a regular basis and pet by feeders? If cats were considered domesticated, why are they allowed to be outside houses or fences? Unlike some birds in sanctuary, most cats are healthy and don't need delicate care. Cats naturally hunt birds for fun, even though not necessarily for prey. A lot of birds/squirrels are spotted killed by cats. Keeping cats in this way contradicts what they claim to maintain wildlife. Update: Seeing some new reviews, the volunteers and owner avoid mentioning any actions they take to stop cats from approaching birds, squirrels and other wildlife.

This is in response to Emma’s one star review.

I have been a volunteer at the Wildlife Freedom Foundation since 2022, and I would like to clarify that what you’ve stated in your review is completely false. This organization is not to ‘satisfy people’s passion for feeding and petting cats’. I have seen firsthand the AMAZING things this organization does for animals. First, ALL of the cats are neutered or spayed. The utmost care is taken to ensure that the cats are taken care of before being brought to the Sanctuary. While we have rescued young cats that many mistake for kittens, our cats cannot have kittens since they are neutered and spayed! We rehabilitate MANY forms of wildlife including geese, ducks, swans, migratory birds, opossums, squirrels, and more.

Our cats are NOT FERAL CATS. They are formerly owned and rescued from ACC, the killing shelter of the city of New York.

If you no longer see some of our cats, that is great news as it means they have been placed in a foster home or adopted! Please check our website for an extensive gallery of happy stories.

I would like to address the word ‘negligence’ used in your review. Emma, I volunteer with such kind people who are so well-educated on all kinds of animals. These are people who take the utmost care in what they do. Please, Emma, stop by and talk to us if you would like to learn more about the amazing work done by the Wildlife Freedom Foundation. We love visitors and are always happy to have new volunteers! :)

I give the Wildlife Freedom Foundation 5 stars out of 5. There is no where else I would rather volunteer, and I am so proud to be a part of an organization that is actually making a difference in the lives of...

I have seen so many times that the cats on this island having birds in their mouths. This island is on a natural migration pathway for many precious birds: some are even endangered species. Also they never neuter their cats. Every spring, numerous kittens would pop out and appear outside our buildings. Many of them disappear quickly. I doubt if they were adopted or they just died out of negligence. This organization claims that they love animals, but what they do is to the let the cats kill birds, breed and die. I wonder if the existence of this organization is just to satisfy some people’s passion for feeding and petting some cats. They don’t care about anything else.

Because how would you explain all the dead birds we see in your cats’ mouth and what have you done to stop cats getting them?? How do you explain all the kitties we see every spring if all your cats are neutered?? And if you are a federal registered non-profit organization, you should welcome voices from the community to question the purpose and execution of your organization. Otherwise how it is different from using this land for your...
