Cool piece of NYC history on Roosevelt Island! The Strecker Memorial Laboratory is a small Romanesque stone building was once the home to groundbreaking work in understanding disease in the early 20th century. Funded by the Strecker family, for whom the lab is named, it was constructed in 1892 and was the first laboratory in the country devoted exclusively to pathological and bacteriological research! Historic brick building located in the west side of Southpoint Park, Roosevelt Island. It was built in 1892, in the Romanesque revival style. Originally dedicated to pathological and bacteriological research and support of the nearby City Hospital. It was closed in the 50s and abandoned. It was placed on the national register of historic places in 1972. The city restored the building and the MTA uses it now as power conversion substation for the 53rd subway...
