If I could give this place zero stars to get this review posted, I would.
My husband and I were so excited to come out to the drive-in for the first time but were quickly contemplating leaving before the movie even started. My husband grew up near a pretty well-known drive in back in Illinois and always had incredible experiences so that's what we were anticipating.
There were kids everywhere, which was fine but baseballs and frisbees flew around our vehicle and it made us a little nervous. About an hour after we arrived we were sitting in the front seat killing time with our car parked, trunk facing the screen. We were both startled by loud banging on the back of our car which we immediately assumed was one of the objects the kids were playing with. To out surprise it was an employee tapping on the back window with a metal cased X-Acto knife. A man with glasses came around to the front of the car as my husband rolled down the window and proceeded to tell us we needed to move our vehicle closer to the post because it was illegal to take up two spots and asked "what are you guys doing?" as if it were intentional. We assumed based off the parking when we first arrived that this was how we were supposed to be.
My husband asked if he hit the car to clarify whether or not it was a flying object to which the employee responded condescendingly "did I offend you, I didn't know if you were getting your clothes back on." He asked us if we were planning on watching with the hatch up and we said yeah and he handed us rope and asked if we had ever been here before. When we responded that we had not we thought perhaps we would get a lowdown of what was expected with tying the hatch but instead we were hit with another rude remark of "then how do you know how to use this?" When my husband responded using common sense the guy announced to the crowd around us "oh good, he has a brain! "
I was fired up and frankly pissed considering we were paying customers treated disrespectfully off the bat for no legitimate reason. We moved the car closer to the pole and the employee circled back around and introduced himself as "Brian, the director." My husband introduced himself as well and shook hands trying to keep the peace and made the observation that another vehicle may have a hard time fitting in the spot next to us. Again we were met with another unnecessary rude comment to which he said " well why don't you move over? I mean come on, you have 2 feet next to you still. You're parked in the Cadillac section so if you don't like it you can go to the back and I'll leave you alone."
My husband said "sorry, I just didn't want someone dinging the car." Brian then yelled again to the other customers around us sitting outside "hey, nobody ding this guys car up."
I couldn't even believe it. When I pay to go somewhere I don't need anything handed to me on a silver platter but I do expect respect as I would imagine all people do. This is a family place, a place people from out of town might be coming to, so get to know your audience. I don't care if you're the director, CEO, or someone selling concessions, you have zero right treating someone the way we were treated there. I don't know if the ultimate goal was to make us feel bad for something as simple as a parking mistake, or if this guy got picked on a ton in high school and tries to redeem himself by belittling others, but either way I doubt I'll be back.
Let me clarify as well that we were both polite in response, and there were multiple cars parked the same as we were. After reading previous reviews it sounds like we weren't the first people this has happened to.
Whether it matters or not I'll be letting others know of our encounter here and strongly suggesting to stick to your closest movie theater.
For those of you who still plan on attending, make sure you do your research so Brian doesn't mistake any of your unclarity as an opportunity to treat you...
Read moreMy family's night started out great, kids playing, good company, until one guest told me to move my vehicle over. Mind you, my vehicle is is a large SUV, and the post was about 18 inches from my door. Enough to open the door to get out without hitting my door on the post. That same guest told me I had to move or they will get the manager. I told the person to get the manager because their approach to me was very disrespectful.
This is point of which things turned for the absolute worst. I was sitting by vehicle with my child when a man wearing glasses starting hitting my vehicle yelling out "who's car is this" I politely responded back "it's my car". This man immediately began to yell at me that I could not save spots. I told him that I was not saving a spot. The man began to yell at me, with my toddler child in my hands, that I need to move my car over because there is another car that is trying to get in between my vehicle and the other post. I then tried to explain to him that my vehicle is as close to the post as the other vehicles. Well this man was not having it. He continued talk over me when tried to tell him that I would move my car over, but I asked him why did he specifically come to my vehicle when you could clearly see that there were multiple vehicles park right in the middle of the post. This is when the man in glasses started acting like a child.
The man began to walk to the other vehicles that needed to move over, at one point he was banning on the hood of car. He also began to yell out " sorry I have to ruin everyone's night because Mr. Tattle Tale there says I have to tell the other cars to move over".
I was just about to lose it, then the man in glasses came up to me, as I was trying leave, got into my face, and told me "wow you're one hard nut to crack, you're just a stupid millennial who thinks they're entitled to everything". I don't care what your take is on millennials is, but the way this man was acting was completely rude and uncalled for, especially since he was around a bunch of families.
After finally getting away from this man, we tried to get our refund, after getting our refund, he was still berating my family. I asked another employee about this person and found out this man was the OWNER!!!
I could not believe this.I use to go to the Dallas Motor View Drive In when it was open, and when there was a problem, the owner there would very politely ask people to move their vehicles over, or even offered to help people park there vehicle. But this, I could need believe this place that was voted number one in the country. If this is the kind of customer service/ownership you can exspect, I will make sure to tell as many people as possible never to go there ever.
And I know this review will get looked over, and people will say that I was out of line for not moving(remember though I did say I would move), but this owner made a ridiculous scene out of nothing, and also ruined my...
Read moreThe last time I saw a movie at a drive-in theater was "The Fifth Element" back in 1997; had I known we still had one in our area, I'd have been coming a lot more frequently! Now that I know, return visits are definitely going to be a frequent occurrence!
Some friends invited us to see the Godzilla+Kong / Dune 2 double-feature, meaning we ended up staying for over six hours, well into the wee hours of the night! Although they didn't have the wildly inappropriate Dune 2 popcorn bucket, everything else about the experience was awesome! Talk about a blast from the past!
For an extremely reasonable price (our ticket total came to $35 for two adults and four kids), you roll on in and find a spot to park your vehicle (closer is better, if you ask me), pop the trunk or tailgate, tune in to the radio broadcast (96.5 FM), and settle in for a long, but enjoyable, nostalgic cinematic experience.
The concession stand in the building nearby is similarly retro, with classic monster movie posters, tchotchkes and movie props, an old TV playing the employees' film of choice (Empire Strikes Back, during our visit), and concession prices that don't seem to have changed much since the 90s! Massive popcorn buckets run you $4, $5 or $6 bucks, soda is cheap, and other fun treats, such as a couple of microwaved White Castle sliders, cost you a whopping $3 bucks. Unlike any major movie theater chain, the prices here are affordable enough that taking the entire family won't break the bank!
If you're an oldster (like me) looking to relive a classic movie-going experience from your youth and share it with your family and friends, or a youngster wondering what all the fuss is about, 99W is the place to make it happen! So pack up the kiddies, grab some blankets and pillows, and get yourself on down to Newberg, because rain or shine,...
