04/16/25 SCARY. (Read to the end so you can read how they did not remove an item from a shelf that could literally hurt someone); Remember the Italian guys back on Grand Avenue in New Haven? Gone, all of them, and a new breed is there. I went down yesterday to get some kielbasa, you know, the special one they make at Easter time? They were all gone. I was hoping there was some left at this late hour. So I had to settle for the cryovac pre-packaged stuff, but, the ones with THEIR label on it. The highway was slow so 30 minutes up and 30 back. When I got home I opened the tight seal on the kielbasa to find it covered in a white slime. I opened another, same thing, then my last of three and same thing. Sticky, white, bubbly, snotty gooey, pasty white-ish, gross liquid. There were streamers as I pulled my hand away. I called, and since I never bought this one before, thought I would check on it. "I remember you, the guy that was just in looking for the good kielbabsa?, and No, that isn't right. Once in a great while we get something like that" said the guy in the meat department". He said I can "come back and get a refund". I said that an hour of driving isn't worth $18 and he he said- no, it isn't. actually, since I remember you, we can refund you over the phone if you used a credit card? I said yes, I did, and he transferred me to another guy, who spent the time to tell me that it could be just fat inside the package (no way). He kept saying to eat it, if i feel comfortable and How does it smell? I don't know what answer you are looking for, he said. I said- I handled food in a famous local restaurant for many years when I was younger, i know food, and What I am looking for is for you to open one up right there and check it out while I am on the phone? He said I am too far on the other side of the store to do that. I said ok, but my intention is for you to take them off the shelf so no one gets sick!. He said- "We don't produce those, we just slap our label on them". He said everything he could say but the bottom line is- I tossed all 3 into the garbage. There are other people that will get those left on the shelf. What an A-hole move on their part. I won't go back for my refund or anything, ever, because I will never forget how he handled me. Everything...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI loved shopping at the old Ferraro's Market on Grand Ave. It was a Mom and Pop type of grocery store and the atmosphere was homey. Giuseppe was the cook in the back and he made fantastic meals to go, salads, soups, sauces and they always had great subs. I didn't shop there for meats because I prefer T&J market for my meats. But nobody could beat Giuseppe's meals to go which I purchased in abundance and then froze. The new Ferraro's has a big chain atmosphere in a very small store. It is not at all a friendly or homey establishment as it previously was although the store workers were helpful. The salads are way over dressed with mayonnaise and not at all up to what they sold on Grand ave. It may be labeled the same, but it does not taste the same. And I bought multiple salads every visit to the old store. Out of the 7 salads I bought (1 lb each) I threw out 5, all heavily dressed with mayo and not palatable. The antipasto salad was good. The meatless spaghetti sauce is thick and tasty, the lobster bisque and pea soup were very good. However, the meatballs were horrible and ended up in the trash also. There was no meat taste to them at all. Giuseppe's meat balls were great. I purchased a few pork to go meals which were on the level of a frozen tv dinner....not something you would expect from an Italian market. I checked out the meats and found the prices to be higher than the old market prices. All in all, I was very, very disappointed in the new Ferraro's market. Some times it is better not to expand a good thing. I for one, will never shop there again... the reasons I loved the old store are gone...

I called Ferraroās for a price as Aldiās didnāt have any. The gentleman switched me to a female who was in produce, and I was hung up on. After five minutes on the phone, I was a little bit perturbed. I decided to give them one more chance and called back again got the same old gentleman and he told me the price was $1.49 per pound so I told him Iām coming right down got there in about a half an hour walked in and they were $1.89 a pound. I tried to talk to somebody in the store and they said many people answer the phone. I purchased a small amount, then called from my car in the parking lot and got the same guy. He said he thought they were on sale, but never bother to check then question that I would drive almost a half an hour just for peppers. Then hung up on me Iām done...
