Walking up to the pier I couldn't understand initially why there were so few people at the end of the pier. However as my experience unfolded it became abundantly clear why so few people were there. A fence and tacky souvenir shop mark the halfway point on the pier where the walk up turned from joy to disappointment.
In order to pass through the souvenir shop to the end of the pier you must pay a toll to the grumpy pier troll. A smug, grumpy, fat old man remarking to others about how nothing in Ocean City is free. An interesting thought considering my walk down the boardwalk was free, my daily trips to the beach from my rental was free, and up until that point my walk to the end of the pier was free. While I am not usually one to grumble over something as cheap as $1, it gives you the same sensation as paying for tolls. Even though the pier was quite obviously paid for as a public works project paid by tax payers, there is now a grumpy pier troll collecting his 'cut'.
The locks that were bolted across all the fences was neat and the views from the end of the pier were decent, but they did not capture the smell. The smell at the end of the pier wreaked of rotten sea food, which I suppose is to be expected when dead fish are being used as bait.
Ultimately the trip to the end of the pier was decent, but I would never do it again especially if I have to pay for it or deal with a grumpy pier troll...
Read moreThere are nicer piers nearby to visit that are free. No "love locks" to weigh the dock down and no needing to go through a cliché gift shop to get to the end of it. I'v been to the end of it twice in the past when it was 50¢ to pass through. The website doesn't tell you about any fee. You have to find out the hard way that you have to pay a toll to go through.
It isn't worth it more than once with all the fisherman blocking the views. Another reviewer was right about the grumpy old toll troll. The beaches longest pier and only ocean-facing pier should be part of the free...
