Years ago I said this is the best Half Price Books in the Chicago area. The selection is still great. Lots of items in niche topics. Great magazine selection even.
I mostly shop for comics and board games. The board game selection is plentiful but the pricing is hit or miss. Sometimes it is cheaper on Amazon and those are brand new. I bought a decent amount of games here and for years I only had one board game in bad enough condition to return. The last game I bought there however, when I took the shrink-wrap off, the box was covered in something sticky. They took the return an hour later but not before claiming they'd never have bought it that way. They did.
The comic and graphic novel selection still beats every other HPB by a landslide. The pricing used to be incredible at pretty much $1 for everything, but now they're falling under the same "let's gouge the nerds" philosophy. They offered me 2 cents per comic when I wanted to unload some of my collection but their prices they resell them for are insane now. Better off with eBay for buying and selling. Never thought I'd be saying that.
Their comic book clearance have the bags removed and the stickers slapped on the covers, ruining them. Considering most comics probably are bought from the public in the bags, this is just gross nickel and diming.
Video game consoles are reasonable. I bought a Wii and an XBOX360 from there at great prices in working condition. The Wii sensor cord was damaged but worked. It could have used a bit of a cleaning, too. Game price is another area where the unpopular games are reasonable but if they think there is any demand for something, it'll be high. Disc Replay nearby is a better option.
If you're selling any collectibles, definitely go to Disc Replay. They treated me very reasonably when I unloaded my Funko collection and some figures.
I don't know about music but my brother says the vinyl and even CDs...
Read moreI always love coming here to look for a specific book title, dvd, music, even if I'm not going there to buy anything I am always drawn into something I see or find there and am there for hours looking, browsing, reading books there if I can't really buy them, or I read some of each one I find before choosing what to get! I like hiding among the shelves and I find a little spot to browse through what I find. Same goes for the vinyl, whether it's a "good selection" or not to me really depends on what a person is interested in to begin with cos everyone has their own definition of "good selection." I look through all the vinyl all the time cos ya never know what you can find! I love going there and being suprised by what I find cos it's always something, even if I can't buy it it's just fun for me to go take a look, I like the environment of the store too, it's pretty chill, friendly... I love the little nooks I find to kneel down on the floor and read what I find and then find more, then before I realize it's been like 5 hours hahaa.... Half Price books is awesome, there's something there for everyone. It's my home away from home aside from the...
Read moreToday, I visited this business for the first time to sell about 20 or so used children's books for de-cluttering purposes. The first employee that I encountered at the "Selling" Counter was a bit gruff. He didn't greet me, he only instructed me to place my bags of books on the floor in front of the counter. He explained the procedures only after I asked him and explained that I had never done this before. As part of the selling process, I had to show the employee my driver's license and give him my phone number. Per his instructions , I remained in the store while I waited for them to review my books and create an offer. I had hoped that I'd be paid no less than 50 cents per book. Instead, another (friendlier) employee offered me $1.25 for the entire lot, claiming that many of my books were not very popularand would be donated to some other organization. I accepted the offer because I didn't want to return home with those books. However, I left feeling as though I had been taken advantage of. Rather than drive all the way out to Orland Park to donate my gently used books again, I'll just save on the gas and donate/sell them...
