They have a nice variety of groceries. Of course it is hit or miss. If you go during a busy time when it hasn't been recently restocked, the variety isn't as good.
My only criticism is the poor inventory turnover process. Unlike Weis Market and Walmart, ALDI does not have a clearance section and so items they do reduce often sit on the shelves and get overlooked (hence the other reviews mentioning moldy or expired products). A couple hours from closing there was a product with a use by date marked for that exact day. The product looked bad and should have been marked down several days in advance.
Some people dislike the quarter system for carts, but it's not bad at all. Leave a few quarters in your car so you don't forget one. This system helps keep costs down and allows employees to focus on restocking and cashiering.
I HIGHLY advise you to use contactless payment like Apple Pay or Google Pay. I have a card I have only ever used here and at the State College Sam's Club snack bar and the number was obtained and used fraudulently. Provided I have only ever used the card at these two places, there's a VERY HIGH probability of card skimmers at either this location or the State College Sam's Club snack bar. If you are not familiar with contactless payment, please look up a tutorial on YouTube on how to use them, help your less tech savvy friends and relatives get on board with contactless payment. It's far more secure and...
Read moreI was so looking forward to Aldi opening up in State College. I never had a bad experience in any of their stores I have walked into. That changed today. I know the cashiers have to move quickly. But never have I had one toss items into the cart with no care as to where they land or what they land on. Jars and cans landing on bags of snack foods is unacceptable.
When it was time to pay for the order, the register wouldn't accept payment. After huffing and puffing the cashier called the manager who told us that it was our problem that their system didn't recognize the payment method. Strange that it works everywhere else. So manager, if you would listen to what I'm saying, fix your system. It's your job, not ours.
I want to say one more thing. This is the first Aldi I have been in with male employees, and the first time I've had an issue. Maybe they should look into this...
Update: I have only been back in this store once since. I have no idea if the issue has been dealt with. Keeping the...
Read moreI stopped into the new Aldi location this evening for the first time with high hopes-- I used to love the Aldi where I lived in college. I'm hoping that the nearly bare shelves were just an indication of currently supply disruptions, but I couldn't even find bananas or clementines, which I think of as pretty basic. I was hoping to pick up a treat in the baked good section, but the selection was even more limited there, and the prices on several items were more than I'm used to paying for comparable products at Trader Joe's, which I think tends toward really good quality items. Though the store brand processed foods were a bit cheaper than I typically see at Walmart, it wasn't a huge difference, and a number of items that I frequently purchase were the exact same price. I'll certainly give it another try to be sure, but based on this visit I can't see passing up my go-to stores to visit one with a drastically more limited selection and marginally lower...
