I went here for improv night during the Gallery Crawl. It was cozy and had comfortable seating. However, the first time I went to Harris Theater was to watch Beast of the Southern Wild. This is a great place to watch independent films or some oldies or nostalgic black and while film, along with stop motion animation. They try to keep the films interesting by having theme and then show films that fall within the selected category. This is also the place to enjoy Pittsburgh's very own film festival. The Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival is currently happening this month (March 2024). Since Harris Theater is located in the Cultural District you've access to great dining and hotels. Parking is close by and if you prepaid for parking it cost less and you're able to use one of the city owned parking garages. Additionally, there are no shortage of access to public transportation! You're able to take both the trolley blue, red or slive lines or a bus. If you're taking the trolley (also known as the T) you should come off at the wood street stop) however it is also an easy walk from either the the Gatway station stop or Steel Plaza) I highly reccomend making a trip to Harris Theater. Have dinner or a late lunch and linger around take in the sights and sounds of the Pittsburgh Downtown. There are a lot of free things to do do come ealry and make a whole day of it. Checkout their website and you can buy tickets online or pay...
Read moreJust about the only place left in Pittsburgh to see new-release foreign and independent films. Most other outlets for this kind of cinema have been shut down - Pittsburgh Filmmakers foremost among these.
Technically, this is not a good theater at all. The theater seats are on the narrow side and very uncomfortable. The theater itself is long and very narrow. The screen is quite small and positioned unnaturally high. The projection is really dim. Same movies viewed on a streaming service on home TV are much brighter and reveal more detail. The sound quality is poor. There are very few people in attendance, usually just a handful per showing.
The theater is located on a sketchy block of Liberty Ave. There is a nuisance beer-and-vape store on the corner attracting bad crowd. There are homeless people roaming around the block. There is usually trash and, sometimes, urine and vomit on the sidewalk. There is almost no street parking and the garage across the street costs a minimum of $8.
Despite all the drawbacks involved I keep coming back often. Pittsburgh is an awful film town with very few choices for foreign and independent cinema, and this is just about the only place left to see these films on a...
Read moreGreat space for such a great films! The Spanish film “The Beasts” was one of the most deep drama with an amazing acting, script, story, and photography. You could know it was going to be a great film from scene one.
The space has been renovated, everything is cleaned and well maintained. Crossing the street a parking lot with plenty of space.
Last, but not least, the staff. These folks are friendly, knowledgeable and prompt to help. We forgot a phone in the restrooms, and we contact them, and they found it. Thank you so much, Tray,...
