ChatGPT said: ChatGPT Portland Outdoor Store, a venerable fixture in Portland, Oregon, celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2019 with a series of memorable events and community gatherings. Established in 1919, the store has witnessed and adapted to a century of change, from the early 20th century’s burgeoning outdoor recreation scene to today’s expansive range of adventure sports. For its centennial, the store hosted a week-long festival featuring local bands, outdoor gear exhibitions, and talks by renowned adventurers. The celebrations were not just about looking back but also about promoting the future of outdoor exploration, with proceeds supporting local environmental initiatives. When Portland Outdoor Store first opened its doors, the city was experiencing a cultural renaissance, with the Portland Rose Festival gaining prominence and the city's thriving arts scene making waves. The store’s opening coincided with an era of increased interest in the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty, fueling a growing community of outdoor enthusiasts. The store’s longevity and adaptation over the decades highlight its role in fostering Portland’s outdoor culture. Its 100-year celebration not only honored its past but also reinforced its commitment to encouraging future generations to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.

TOP TIER SERVICE- some people call it “following you around” I call it “at your service”. Brad made me feel like I was the most important customer of the day even though I only bought a few simple things. Every time I go to the store, I fall in love with something new. Next, I hope to go back for a beautiful long Pendleton coat. The merchandise is neither cheap nor inexpensive but if you are familiar with any of the brands they carry, you know that they are worth it. Many will last for 10 to 20 years. Maybe for the rest of my life with the right care. I love my FRYE boots, my Schott jacket, my new hooded Carhart jacket and my beautiful rabbit gloves and beanie. The boots only took a few days to come in and they fit beautifully. Brad was very kind about letting me make sure that everything I bought was a good fit. He ordered two sizes for me so that I could choose a size that fit best. Everyone in the store is very friendly and kind. The first floor has amazing outdoor jackets and backpacks and boots galore. You really have to take your time in the store to appreciate everything they’ve picked for their customers. On the second floor there are lots and lots of beautiful women’s items. And up on the very top floor, on the third floor they’ve got saddles and wool blankets and just some really amazing stuff to look at. It’s an awesome building and it’s really worth visiting.

Not sure if they don't get many people of color in here, or if specific employees are unable to overlook their preconceptions about Blacks, but I was rather disturbed by the young girl working the floor who decided to follow me through the entire store from front to back, and back again... Nevermind the fact that she asked twice if I needed assistance, to which I replied I was only looking; AND the fact that there were plenty of other customers in the store that she could be helping. Who knows, maybe the three piece suit I was wearing struck her as "suspicious" for some reason? The older gentleman at the counter was much friendlier, and far more helpful in directing me to a store that had what I was looking for. Aside from the casual overtones of racist profiling, the store actually had some beautiful classic Western wear items, but nothing I'd classify as "outdoor," as it's defined in the current market. Good boutique spot, but not the place to go if you're wanting outdoor gear - or a feeling of non-discriminatory and inclusive acceptance.

This place is amazing on levels. The quality of the goods, the customer service and the atmosphere is all top notch. I work in tourism here in downtown Portland and my job is to walk around downtown and check all the shops in the city. I try all the restaurants, boutiques, food carts, big box stores ect., and out of all the places I have gone to, The Portland Outdoor Store is just the best. I am not saying this because I am related to anyone that works here or because I am friends with anyone that works here either. I am saying this because out of the hundreds of interactions and experiences that I have had in this city, nobody dos it better than The Portland Outdoor Store.

You can not fake the level of customer service you are going to get here. A lot of the newer modern spots in town should be taking notes. Even some of you more established spots that have created a name for yourself but grown a little too complacent over the years could learn a thing or two from these guys. A lot of people that work in customer service tend to act a little too cool for school or that they are too good for the job they are doing. This does not exist in this store. Even if you are personally not in to the type of fashion that is going on here just stop by and say hello. Meet some real people and then feel the difference when you decide to go to some hip new spot where the 20something working the counter does not even realize that you have been in his 800 sq. ft. store for the past 6 minutes. If you enjoy eye contact and being treated with respect please check...
