The Benson hotel has established itself as my go-to location when traveling to Portland. The hotel staff are kind and inviting. They responded to the current pandemic with care and attention. All aspects of our room were clean, and clearly marked as sanitized prior to our stay. The remote control was even shrink-wrapped for easy cleaning.
We brought our dog with us on this trip, and they gave her a welcome gift with a toy (her new favorite!) and treat, and some baggies to clean up on walks. The hotel staff were happy to direct us to the nearby parks when time for her walks, and recommended dog-friendly dining options with outdoor seating. Although the Palm Court restaurant is temporarily "closed" the seating is still open and they welcomed us by offering a complimentary drink each evening. Most guests opted to take drinks to their room, but my husband and I enjoyed them at a table downstairs, and I'm glad we did.
Jeff in the Palm Court is a stand-out host. He greeted us, and our dog, warmly each evening. Even with social distancing and masks, you could see the smile in his eyes, and hear it in his voice. He asked warmly about our day, and gave us some wonderful suggestions for a dog-friendly itinerary walking trails near the zoo and seeing the local sights. He really helped make our trip a success.
Also, I can't say enough good things about the service and accommodations overall. Unfortunately, the first room we had developed a clog in the shower drain, and we discovered it at midnight. Despite the late hour, front desk staff responded promptly with keys to a new room so we could shower, and offered to help us relocate on the spot. We were tired though, and asked to wait until morning. After breakfast, they sent a valet to move all our bags across the hall for us, and upgraded us to a larger room. Service was exceptional, and the beds in this hotel are the absolute most comfortable that I've ever slept on. Seriously, best mattress, and best sleep in years!
When it came time for checkout we called the front desk who sent the valet to pull our car around, and another person to pick up our bags for us. He said something like, "you're welcome to head downstairs if you'd like, and I'll load the bags and bring them to you. Your car should already be waiting." I over-packed, and was getting used to lugging things around on my road-trip, but the Benson team didn't make us lift a finger. Every need was tended to during our stay. This place earned...
Read moreMy husband and I decided that we needed a romantic night during our stay in Portland. We initially went to reserve a regular room here at the Benson. The Hilton reservation department was so unprofessional and signed us up for some things without my concent so the wonderful manager Lisa generously upgraded us to a Penthouse suite. We were thrilled! We booked about a week in advance so it's something we had ample time to anticipate and look forward to. When we got to the hotel there was no parking besides valet which is $42 a day, it would have been nice to be informed of that, it was a bit of a bummer but we were getting to stay in a Penthouse so whatever right?! We had just driven all the way up the coast on the 101 from Waldport so we were so ready for a bath, some room service and a movie in bed. Well that's when things went downhill. There was no hot water in the room, the TV was not a smart TV so we couldn't just watch Netflix or use our Prime account and the TV they had was so old it's audio and visuals were out of sync so we couldn't even watch TV. We called down to the front desk and they moved us to a Penthouse with hot water but the TV situation was still choppy. The room was super outdated. Thigs were falling apart. There was no glass wear, the front desk took over 45 mins to send up robes and slippers. We still paid over $300 for one night and quite frankly if it weren't for the bed I absolutely would consider that too much. I definitely wouldn't pay more than that to be in what they consider a Penthouse, they charge over $600 for on a cheap night for the room we got. I stayed at the Benson over a decade ago and remembered it to be so classy and beautiful, don't get me wrong the staircase and chandeliers are lovely but the Penthouse room was just ok. I've stayed at way lower end hotels who's regular rooms were comparable. The tempurpedic bed was lovely and so were the sheets, that part of the stay was good and I did enjoy a bath finally. Over all though I believe that's the last time we will be staying at the Benson. It's so disappointing and unfortunate but its just not worth the money. We left underwhelmed and feeling like we paid for more than we got. On a good note Lisa and Briana were fantastic! The customer service and staff are lovely! They were all top notch let's be...
