I was looking for a new sofa that would be our next-10-years sofa. I wanted something of quality with the ability to customize fabric and possibly cushion count. I had been looking online (Article, Joybird, West Elm etc.) and was really close to purchasing something off of Joybird, but came across reviews about people who ordered online and had to wait 3-4 months for their furniture to arrive (most online retailers do not manufacture in the US), only to be shipped with missing or damaged parts. I thought about how awful that experience would be, and decided to look locally since I believe in supporting local businesses.
Well guess what, What's New? Furniture has the same mid-century or modern styles of furniture that you are looking for online, but for competitive prices if not cheaper, and made right here in the United States! Even better, they carry pieces that are made by someone in Woodburn, OR, and every model we looked at was of top quality, customizable and cheaper than online retailers! If that doesn't even sound good enough to you, if you buy the pieces made by the guy in Oregon, it only takes them 4-6 weeks to make the custom furniture, and the delivery fee is like a flat $75! We happened to also be looking for a new dresser for my boyfriend, and we found this BEAUTIFUL tallboy, a consigned/used piece but was only $375! If we had purchased something like that on West Elm I can guarantee you it would have cost a $1000. It also made us happy that we were recycling furniture. Also the staff are so nice and at no point did we ever feel like we were being pressured to purchase furniture. We went back to the store 4 times in a week and every time someone different greeted us and 0 pressure. They let us walk around and sit on things and answered all our questions and even helped me make a final decision because I was being indecisive between two pieces. The guy who helped me gave me his honest opinion on what each piece offered, and that really helped me decide which one was right for us.
I almost bought a $1500 couch on Joybird on sale (the couch was normally listed at $1800+, and it's not even made in the US!) but instead, spent $1500 for a couch made right here in Oregon. Oh and that includes a customization of 2 seat cushions instead of the standard 3 cushions. If I had purchased it with the standard 3 cushions, it would have been like $1350 or something like that. Also most of their standard-sized sofas were a little shy of $1k. I know Ikea sells sofas at that price these days but why on earth would you buy build-it-yourself Ikea when you can buy local, hand-crafted, high-quality furniture here? Seriously.
Anyway, BUY LOCAL!!! It gives me peace of mind knowing that if anything were wrong with the items I purchased, I could just drive down the road to ask for help, and I probably can also get my cushions replaced if they start to sag though I was told the foam is made here in Oregon as well so I'm sure they're high quality. I'm a middle-class worker so I don't have a ton of money to spend on furniture but when making big purchases like this, I couldn't have been more delighted to have found a local furniture store that spoke to my aesthetics and fit within my budget and allowed me to contribute to the local economy. 5 out of 5 will buy...
Read moreIf I could give 10 stars to Liam and Julius at What's New Furniture, I would. Actually 100 stars!
My kid is leaving the nest: moving to a new town to take a great job. I'd transferred a lot of my anxiety about this transition onto the question of where they're going to SIT, and after hours of searching, I found a beautiful sofa sleeper in perfect condition on consignment on the What's New website. It felt perfect.
Today we went to the new town and found an apartment, so on our way home, I called and talked to Liam to find out if the sofa was still available. When he said it was, I said I might not make it back before they closed, and Liam offered to stay late so we could see the sofa. I didn't want to keep him, but Liam was so kind and welcoming that I took him up on his offer.
We arrived 10 minutes after the store closed, and Liam and Julius greeted us warmly, Liam showed us the sofa and invited us to take our time with our decision. I can't overstate the impact of Liam's kindness after the day we'd had. We bought the sofa (yay!), and What's New Furniture has so much beautiful, affordable furniture, rugs, and art—both new and consignment pieces—that we'll certainly be returning.
Thank you, Liam and Julius, for making both our day and this transition so much easier! Now I can stop relentlessly searching for sofas and start dealing with my feelings....
Read moreAfter weeks of searching and researching we finally ordered a custom Stanton from What’s New and it was an all around great experience. Initially we came in to see what they had with the intention of shopping their consignment. While looking around, they offered to help but left us to our own devices after so we didn’t feel pressured or bothered, which was great! (A pushy environment will drive me away, so I greatly appreciate it.) We didn’t purchase our first visit because we were in full research mode, but our initial experience brought us back once we were ready.
When we returned, the associate who got us set up, was fantastic. It took about 6 weeks for our custom order to come in (faster than expected!) at which point the owner (I forgot to write down everyone’s names! Please know we appreciate you still!) helped us wrap up our arrangements. He was delightful to work and the team members who delivered our sofa were friendly, communicative, and helpful (they set up the sectional and took all the wrapping with them)!
All around a great customer...
