Great potential- better than most reviews say.
I have been to this place a few times. The older couple don't really care about the business because they make their money elsewhere, but the son has some really cool ideas for the place he was showing me. I know this sounds horrible, but while he was explaining this to me I felt, man I can't wait till the older couple kick the can and he runs the place. The place has the potential to make Provo musicians not want to go to SLC to buy stuff. I will admit somethings are a bit over priced, but as you read throughout the other strands, they give you a deal.
I went in there to get some supplies to restore an Ibanez acoustic guitar that my sister bought in Amsterdam and the son was very helpful- better customer service than I ever got from Guitar Center. Giving me tips on how to restore it and restring it (it is classical and I have always worked with steel strings). You could tell he was interested in helping. I also bought a BOSS SYB 5 pedal there cheaper than anywhere I could find. He explained to me that the things that are expensive to ship are what drives their prices up a bit for some of the items, but small items like strings, etc. are competitively priced. The only time I was not happy with the price is I asked for a hard shell bass case- they asked $200 for it, saw it online for $100, and eventually ended up getting it for $65, with shipping costs. Somethings could be better priced to make me want to go there always. I could see how something like that could translate into a lot of their items.
I really do think this place has the potential to do better, if not amazing. I can see why it gets bad ratings because, like I said, I have been in there a few times, and the older couple don't really run a business- they are just grumpy and don't really want to help out and have nothing better to do than sit in that place making it worse. As long as I live in Provo, I will still stop by and hope that things go the way...
Read moreI am shocked and amazed that this business is still open.
I have had several negative experiences, but since I just tried them one last time today, I'll just tell you what to expect if you decide to enter the nightmare that is Bill Harris Music. The place is in absolute shambles. I would be terrified to buy anything because all their products are treated horribly. It's all buried under mounds of paper and garbage. The place looks like an episode from Hoarders or something. Disastrous. The service is appalling. Bill himself can be friendly, but doesn't know anything. He has employed a younger guy who is a bit more helpful, but the dude is totally paralyzed by the logistical nightmare that the Harris's have created. They didn't know if they had what I was looking for, and ended up just scrounging through boxes of actual junk to find one. Finally I just gave up and left and went to Summerhays in Orem where they gave me exactly what I needed with a smile. The prices seem reasonable, but I really have no idea what condition anything is in because the place is such a train...
Read moreI WAS in the market for a bass guitar and amp and have since found another business that is deserving of my money. I came to visit the store around 12:15 I walk in and the place is absolutely deserted. I look around for someone to talk to and find no one so I decide to look around for myself. I literally had to turn on their lights so I could see in the show rooms. After finding and looking at what I came for I left the store. On my way out an older woman lounging on sofa asks me "Were you the one rummaging around back there for a long time? I don't like when people come in and I don't know about it. Next time yell." First, I did no rummaging. Second, you knew I was back there why did you not approach me to make a possible sale and answer questions. Third, you should not expect a new visitor who has never been in your store to YELL FOR HELP WHEN THEY ENTER. I should not have to turn lights on for you. Your store opens at 12 I doubt it's very hard to get out of bed to make it to work on time to turn lights on. Anyway, there are better places to go....
