-100 stars What an absolute joke this school is. Nothing but a money grab. I’m embarrassed and ashamed to have fallen for the nonsense they sold me upon admission. Now maybe it’s just this campus in particular, but the electrical program at SJVC in Rancho Mirage is crap. Teachers were cool but everyone else from admissions, financial aid, “career services”, to the security and so on were useless. First 5 months were ridiculous. We had to learn for ourselves while our “teacher” would leave to go flirt with the front desk security at night. I was left in charge of a group of kids while I knew nothing about the trade. Then when we come upstairs, we’re supposed to be “experts” at things like conduit bending and basic wiring. We never even got one single lecture or lesson. I understand hands on work is important but not everyone came from a background in the field. First wheel class when I first began just seemed like a side job for my teacher, who is no longer with the company. Just a smooth talking cool guy that didn’t teach us anything. “NEC code is important!” Yet we hardly went over it. Now that he’s gone they had a temp from the Ontario campus teaching the conduit bending class and this guy is legit. Sucks that me and many other classmates didn’t get the same treatment. $26k spent horribly. I’d rather have gone to the casino and gambled. Mr. O and Mr. E were great upstairs for commercial, residential, PLCs, and industrial wiring but that’s about it. Career services is useless. If you or anyone else you know is thinking of attending this scam of a school, please consider going a different route, perhaps through IBEW. I’ve got one “lead” on a job for an “electrical helper” and the pay is shit. I was told upon admission, from my advisor at the time, and first wheel teacher (both are no longer with the school) that usual starting pay ranges from $25-35 hourly. That proved to be false. They just bounce you around from advisor to advisor and try to get you awful jobs so they can fill a quota. Truly, I hope this school gets better because it’s a shame what they’re doing to people here. HVAC and nursing seem legit. It’s a classic case of “if I knew then what I knew now….” Thanks for nothing,...
Read moreThe only positive stars out of this place are Ms. Kara and the admission advisor Irene that left because they all always leave. She wasn’t even my advisor but checked on me more than my actual advisor ever did. She genuinely cared. Aside from that Rieko Decker does not care about her students and just sees us as a dollar sign. I was in the hospital for legitimate things and she still just wanted me to show up or she would drop me from my classes — I LITERALLY COULD NOT GET OUT OF BED. She is a hideous person inside and out and will run that place to the ground, oh wait she has nice cushion because the advisor that cared hustled hard to get so many students to reach their potential and they did not even care enough to try to keep her. That advisor still keeps up with me even though she does not work there anymore and that’s how you know she cares and we are not just a dollar sign to her. It is visible that Rieko treats her employs shamefully as seen first hand as she is petty, rude and selfish. Career services is also an a-hole who gets mad after you miss one of his calls. Reality check we have lives!! So disappointing honestly I can say SJVC does not meet their mission only those two employees ever really did carry out the mission and values that sjvc claims. Ms. Kara if you read this, you changed my life for the...
Read moreHorrible staff and poorly managed electrical department. The only redeeming factor they have going is the instructors. Great instructors and they take their time teaching you. The school makes you pay full price for a hardcover book but then give you a digital one that you can’t use after school is done. They don’t let you know you’re in danger of getting dropped from the school until you’re actually dropped. At that point they can squeeze as much money as they can. They’re not clear whatsoever on how attendance and graduation requirements work. They promise you that career services will help you find a job after school but the only calls you get from them is that they hired someone new...
