So Ive been going to Platos on and off as someone who attempts to sell to them (only when I'm lazy because its a joke/NOT worth it) and as an avid thrifter for 1.5 decades and past reseller of my own items. It definitely has some pros and cons which I will discuss below.
I do notice that ironically a lot of the clothes Platos seem to accept is sometimes cheaper Walmart, target, Shein brand yet they will pass up on brand new not lululemon and NWT clothing. They claim that they should not close based off of what is in and like the past two years but that is not been the case based off of me browsing their selection and selling to them. I've never been truly impressed, and some of their prices on the cheaper brands like Target and Shein are practically at retail. I'm not exactly sure how they choose what items they take, but it is BEYOND inconsistent. They claim to only take things that are in fashion currently, but I do feel like that is up to interpretation BASED OFF the YOUNG EMPLOYEE/you could practically bring things back a few weeks that they rejected initially and they will take it then/if its a different employee. With a lot of the employees being either teenagers or younger people in their early 20s, I feel they can't make a TOTAL verdict on what's in style as its dependent on individual/ a lot of people embrace different styles. I am always surprised when going through the racks the amount of stuff they somehow accepted with holes, stains, rips, and missing buttons yet they didn't take my NWT lulu, lululemen or my ugg shoes (which are stainless). Then ill bring it over to Clothes Mentor and they will take all the lulu that Platos passed on😂. The pricing is also BEYOND inconsistent. I have found duplicate items of clothing by the same brand and they will price them vastly different like for example $8 versus $14. You definitely will not get much money or make it rich by selling to Plato's because they do aim to give you the lowest amount possible to profit when reselling. To give you an idea I sold to them nine pieces of gymshark and a pair of boots in great condition and they only gave me $62. Based off how they price things they likely will make $250 off what I gave thrm. It also is more of an expensive clothing type thrift store. It is more selective with you will having to sort through less clothing than going to a typical thrift store. I will say I almost like going in there now just to see how much things I could find with stains and holes as if it's a game😂. I have had repeated experiences in which the customer service is also subpar/lacking at ANY platos location. A lot of the employees spend more time having social hour and talking to one another versus helping you out off the counter.
Now on to positives. Obviously selling with them is NOT going to make you a lot of money by ANY means partly due to the inconsistency on what they take. What little money you get won't go far if you want to spend it there usually. However, I will say they are good to check out sometimes if you are looking for a specific item without sorting through racks upon racks. I still personally prefer different secondhand stores/thrift stores but sometimes I will check Plato's to look at the boots or a specific item of clothing (i.e. sweaters, pants etc). They can be good for parents with teens+young adults to find clothing.
This is not done to completely bash them at all but give an HONEST reality for other people thinking of shopping/selling to them of just how they are. A lot of people have this shared experience hence the ratings they have. Do I still shop there? Yes on occassion, but as a thrifter now in my late 20s, I will choose my other thrift stores to find better bang for my buck on clothing. I do partly avoid them because they don't seem to have the best selection of young employees they hire in terms of customer service at ANY location. Overal, it could be better, but I will shop there on occassion (all while laughing to myself in my mind at how many shein items and items with...
Read moreI wish I had read all the reviews before going, It honestly surprises me that they are still in business after all the negative reviews, just as many have already said they have horrible customer service and process. I went in with a tub of selected brand name clothes in excellent condition and some with tags..so first red flag was the rude up and down look I got as I entered the store, the girl did share the process but seemed annoyed, no smile, rushed through it had me sign didn't give me a timeframe but it's a big 5 gallon tub so I figured it would be a while. I briefly went down a few aisles and was very surprised to see the quality of clothes and shoes, alot of the items were in poor and old condition, and way over priced, extremely loud music but that didn't even bother me as much as the entire experience I was in the store maybe 10 min or less and as I drove off I realized I had gotten the text that my items were ready, I thought that was to fast so I called to make sure and sure enough it was done so I head back to the store and come to find out they did not take not one of my items they stated it was "out of style" "older style", I was on my lunch break in my work clothes so I honestly feel they judged me on appearance and did not really go through all my items,I don't think they would have been able to go through the entire bin, I had Miss me jeans,Guess jeans, rue 21,I had forever 21 clothing I honestly don't think they even went through my items. Such a waste of time, and the staff is beyond judgmental and after reading the many reviews it sounds more like discriminations I don't see any comments on any of the reviews from management or much less the owner, there's comments from over a year ago and the store continues to be exactly the same so for management or ownership to not step in and do something about it or improve or take the time to care and comment on any of these reviews it just speaks volumes! Please don't waste your time or money you can get way better quality better prices on clearance rack that's brand new! With better customer service. Sell on Mercari, eBay, poshmark or donate! There are many organization like dress for success, step2, Esthers closet, etc. People who appreciate it! Not like these types of places that want to undervalue your time and money. 0...
Read moreFirst, I never get a call or text when they're done looking through my items.
Second, they offered me $34 for a lululemon scuba hoodie, Underarmour cropped hoodie, Gym Shark cropped quarter zip, and a pair of Nike shorts...nothing wrong with any of them, most not even worn. I can sell the Lululemon hoodie online for more than the $34. And they most likely sell it for almost double what the offered me for a couple of my items.
Third, they don't even want to look at your items if they aren't a certain brand. There's a nice sign posted that states that so if you don't have some of the wildly popular brands, don't bother. I dropped off all of my things because I had Nike, Underarmour, Lululemon, Gym Shark mixed in with other stuff and I don't even think they looked at it.
Forth, so so so over priced especially for not wanting to pay you. $40 for a pair of Tom's that look worn. That are scuffed and discolored...like really? You can also easily find extremely worn and out dated items all while they won't even look at your fairly new items. I have not been able to buy anything from here. It's dated, damaged, or just overpriced for used clothes.
Fifth, customer service is trash. I don't get a welcome, hello, thank you, good bye....literally nothing from anyone. I have to initiate the conversation and their responses are the bare minimum. I need to see your ID or your total. They don't tell you how long it might take them (although I wouldn't believe them). They don't tell you anything about the buying process just ID, sign this and they take your tote.
I'm just gonna go back to selling online. The $34 for my 5 NAME BRAND items...
