Capitol Treasure is among the best escape rooms in northern California.
My family and I have been to most of the local escape room businesses and numerous others elsewhere, and only one other room we’ve done compares with Capitol Treasure.
If you’ve been to the nearby state Capitol building, you’ll immediately see that NEO Escape Rooms’ recreation is impressively accurate: The checkerboard flooring, the door casings, the sconces with the spherical shades—they make the first room look A LOT like the real location, and it definitely adds to the immersion. As for other hypothetical spaces that may or may not get revealed as the escape room progresses… If there really were a Gold Rush-era artifact capable of global destruction held within the Capitol, and if reality more accurately reflected heist movie set design (alas), that artifact would undoubtedly be concealed and protected in rooms just like the ones that follow the first one.
This is definitely a high-tech room. There are few standard key or combination locks, and those few fit the theme well. Most of the puzzles involve manipulating the set and props in varied and surprising ways. Every puzzle feels unique.
Serena was a skilled and gracious hostess. Her opening monologue laying out the story for the room was perfectly timed to fit the dramatic music cues, and she indulged us in an inordinately long discussion of the room afterwards with surprising patience.
This is a really impressive experience at all levels. When friends ask which escape rooms to do in the area, I will definitely recommend...
Read moreThis review is for their brand new haunted train escape room.
Ambience : 10/10 Everything felt very well made and not just a fakey thing made only for the puzzle. They clearly spent a lot of time on building the set.
Puzzle: 8/10 I really liked one of the puzzles as it was very engaging and complex yet not impossible to figure out. However, the whole thing only had like 4 puzzles, which is by far the least amount of puzzles I've ever experienced in an escape room (sample size 8 across CA). This was by far my biggest drawback to this room. I was very confused when the moderator came in after we finished because I was expecting another room or two with puzzles after that one.
Storytelling: 7/10 Continuing off of my last point, the last "puzzle" meant basically nothing to me in terms of the story. Rest of the experience was great; there was a general story and the puzzles played a role in the storytelling. I just cannot get over how off putting the last puzzle was. The moderator tried to make it sound like it was a mysterious thing, but it came off as "we couldn't think of something that makes sense, so we decided to let you use your imagination."
Overall I had a good time despite the negative things I had to say about it. I think my disappointment at the end was largely due to the set and the middle puzzle setting my expectations very high, which is debatably a good thing. It is a great escape room for beginners but a little unsatisfying for a more...
Read moreTook a trip up to Sacramento from the Bay Area for my birthday to check out NEO Escape Rooms. I did the Capitol Treasure room with my partner, just the two of us, and we both had a lot of fun. We have done over 100 rooms and appreciated the flow of the puzzles tying back to the theme and the set design.
We got stuck on one last puzzle 20 minutes into the game. We felt that we were ahead and decided to wait a few more minutes before asking for a hint. We were still stuck after 5 minutes and asked for a hint, but there was no response for 5 minutes. When the game master responded, he gave a hint for puzzle we had already solved 10 minutes ago. We notified him and continued to work on the puzzle for 5 more minutes, waiting for a response... Again, he gave us a hint for a puzzle we had already solved. Eventually, we figured the puzzle out ourselves and moved on.
Towards the end, it seems like there was a minor technical issue with the switches; eventually the switches did work but we weren't sure why they didn't work the first time - we did the exact same thing without failure multiple times before the switch registered.
While we did escape the room in time without hints and had a lot of fun, which was what mattered the most, the service on behalf of the game master could have been a lot better. We still look forward to their...
