Railroad Fish and Chips has been a stalwart operation on the promenade of the Old Sacramento Waterfront for a long time. The trials of the pandemic have actually expanded their operation to include the former dining room as part of their preparation and storage area. The food is always top notch for good eats. The fish and chips as I experienced tonight were fried perfectly. I also purchased a bowl of clam chowder offered in both a bowl or a bread bowl. It was warm and creamy. Perfectly cooked. Seating can be a premium. The tables are situated along the street side of the boardwalk allowing a vista of the local street scene...in our case the holidays in full swing adjacent to the historic districts Christmas light show. While there are tables, they are only under the covered walk of the overall building. Indoor dining no longer exists. Additionally there are tables behind the structure however the evening we were there, no one was back there. The place for us is a holiday tradition. The sights and sounds...good food and quick service makes this place a must stop place for anyone...

I had ordered the catfish and chips ($18 ) and while we were waiting I seen a rat just run out from under the restaurant and I get it it’s by the river and there’s animals everywhere for example the crazy amount of pigeons and birds flying all over your food if you eat out there ( which we were! 🤦🏽♀️ and I get that can’t really be controlled by the workers / managers The SECOND I finished my food I started feeling nauseated, but I was confused cuz the food was alright so I thought I was just having a little episode, or being dramatic, mind you I haven’t threw up since 1yr+ and I’m not playing I’ve been throwing up for 1hour already and ( tmi really bad! bathroom breaks) and not to mention i gave my daughter a little pice of what i was eating and now I’m praying that she doesn’t get sick like me but honestly from the way I’m feeling idk what it was the kitchen conditions?? The fish ?? ? The rats ?or birds flying over the food..? ? Just be safe , cook your own food...
Read moreWe were here on Saturday at 2PM (mid-April of 2025). It was pretty crowded. We got 2 fish and chips, 1 added sauce, and a bottle of coke, for $37 including tax. Fish is AMAZINGLY good- thin batter and soft fish inside. With some lemon on it, it was very yummy. Fries were good too, although it could be crispier to my taste. Amount of food is pretty good as well, my husband had some of my fries and he felt fairly full. The kick is the sauce. I think they said it’s house-made tartar sauce (dairy free confirmed by my lactose intolerant husband), and it is so fresh and so light. They have outdoor seating area (covered patio) like all the other restaurants at old sac, so it can be really loud time to time- not their fault, but just be aware. People who work here were super friendly and nice despite being busy. Public restroom available with soap and cold water nearby. Would def come back whenever we...
