My experience with Muse Audio came about when I purchased a vintage Pioneer SX-1050. Before contacting Muse, I brought the unit to a TV repair shop in Detroit. I essentially paid $80 to have a “technician” spray the knobs with Deoxit. Needless to say, this was a waste of time and money.
I then spent a little more time researching repair shops and discovered Muse Audio. Apparently, this is the place where anyone serious about audio brings their equipment for service. I learned that the owner, Jeff Hall, was an electrical engineer trained at the University of Michigan and passionate about audio equipment.
When I dropped off the receiver, Jeff was very generous with his time and performed several tests to diagnose the various issues with the receiver. He then wrote up an estimate and was very detailed and transparent about what would be required to restore the unit. Although he indicated that the restoration would require six weeks, he called me two weeks later to indicate that the unit was ready for pick-up.
Along with the restored receiver, Jeff provided in Ziploc bag with all the capacitors and transistors which had been replaced. Jeff explained that with the new capacitors, the rated output went from 120 wpc to 147 wpc. He even took the time to repair a large scratch on the top of the unit. I’m happy to say that the receiver now sounds fantastic.
To sum up, you get what you pay for. Jeff is extremely competent, he takes pride in his work, he uses top quality parts, and he is very customer oriented. I highly...
Read moreIn early May I purchased an MX110 and an MC275 from Muse with the understanding that they were both fully restored. The total cost was over $7,100. Upon receipt of the pieces, I connected them and found that the MC275 broke down at high volume. Rather than ship them from Arizona back to Michigan and risk damaging the older pieces, I had a local audio repair technician inspect them and discovered that the capacitors were undervalued at 500 and should have been 525, meaning that they were not restored correctly. Additionally, we discovered that there were minor adjustments needed to the MX110. I put $1,100 in repairs to the 2 pieces that Muse assured me had been fully restored. Upon contacting Muse they advised that I should have shipped the items back rather than have them looked at locally. I asked Muse to simply reimburse me 1/2 the repair bill and allow me to return the MX110 for reimbursement of the purchase price. Muse offered to take the MX110 for a restocking fee of 15% and to sell me a C20 in exchange at a cost of $5k. I have declined this offer. They further refused to pay 1/2 the repair bill. I don't usually post reviews, but this was an expensive purchase. I'm an audio enthusiast and I'm very disappointed in the...
Read moreSimply the best! They have a long waitlist for their service department, but trust me it's worth it - and it's for a reason. I made the drive here because I was tired of dealing with the places close to me that would only fix what was wrong on my vintage hifi gear. I wanted my favorite gear made new again and Muse understood that goal fully from my first contact.
I picked up my Sansui 9090 and Pioneer SX-5580 from service today. Both sets got a full electronic restoration with a few recommended internal upgrades. I'm just blown away by their attention to detail. Every concern was addressed 100%. The tech working on my units called to talk through a few things and asked me what I wanted while they were on the bench. They even polished the cases and cleaned up the exterior trim and knobs prior to returning them. A fella could hardly ask for more.
If you are a vintage audio enthusiast and want the best I highly recommend. Not cheap but...
